Barbara Steele appears as Cynthia Hichcock in this breathtaking color image from THE HORRIBLE DR. HICHCOCK (1962), drawing back the bed covering to reveal a human skull resting ominously upon the pillow. Dressed in an elegant black period gown and long white gloves, Steele is caught between warm illumination and deep shadow as the pale bed linen leads the eye directly toward the macabre discovery. The collision of Gothic beauty and death gives the photograph extraordinary visual power.

Directed by Riccardo Freda, THE HORRIBLE DR. HICHCOCK—originally released as L’ORRIBILE SEGRETO DEL DR. HICHCOCK—stars Steele as Cynthia, the new wife of Robert Flemyng’s Dr. Bernard Hichcock. Set in Victorian London, the film surrounds Cynthia with death, obsession and increasingly disturbing secrets concealed within her husband’s imposing home. The elaborate wall painting, shadowed chamber and richly detailed period costume seen here perfectly reflect the decadent Gothic atmosphere that made the film one of Steele’s defining early-1960s horror productions.

Carefully restored from original studio-issued archival material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the archival material. The luminous bed linen, human skull, elegant black gown and Steele’s apprehensive presence create a distinctive collectible for Barbara Steele, THE HORRIBLE DR. HICHCOCK, Riccardo Freda and classic Italian Gothic horror collectors.
