A breathtaking image of Barbara Steele as Cynthia Hichcock transforms the terror of premature burial into one of the most claustrophobic compositions associated with THE HORRIBLE DR. HICHCOCK.
Trapped behind the small oval window of a heavy wooden enclosure, Steele presses her hands desperately toward the glass, her extraordinary expression capturing panic, confinement and impending death within a single unforgettable frame.
The composition is remarkably effective. Almost the entire photograph is occupied by dark wood, leaving Steele’s face and outstretched hands confined within the tiny oval opening. Her wide eyes look upward while her fingers press urgently toward the barrier separating her from escape. The very shape of the photograph within the photograph becomes part of the horror: Cynthia appears visually imprisoned before the full circumstances of her predicament are even considered.
Claustrophobic Terror in Italian Gothic Cinema
Directed by Riccardo Freda, THE HORRIBLE DR. HICHCOCK (1962), originally released in Italy as L'ORRIBILE SEGRETO DEL DR. HICHCOCK, stars Barbara Steele as Cynthia, the new wife of Dr. Bernard Hichcock, played by Robert Flemyng.
Set within a macabre Victorian world of death, obsession and forbidden desire, the film gives Steele some exceptionally potent Gothic imagery. Few photographs express that atmosphere as immediately as this one. There is virtually no elaborate scenery to distract the eye—only wood, glass, Steele’s terrified face and the desperate movement of her hands.
The warm color palette makes the image even more unusual. Rich brown wood surrounds Steele’s illuminated complexion, while the darkness beyond the opening seems to close around her. Her pale collar and hands punctuate the otherwise shadowed composition, creating an almost surreal portrait of a woman physically consumed by her surroundings.
