An exceptionally scarce Barbara Steele portrait from THE LONG HAIR OF DEATH captures one of Italian Gothic horror’s defining faces in a mesmerizing black-and-white close-up. Her extraordinary dark eyes, flowing hair and intense expression dominate the composition, creating precisely the kind of haunting imagery that makes original photographic material associated with Steele’s 1960s Gothic films so desirable to collectors.
Framed tightly between the architectural elements surrounding her, Steele looks outward with an expression that is simultaneously beautiful, apprehensive and almost hypnotic. Her enormous eyes become the photograph’s immediate focal point, while the long dark hair cascading around her face visually echoes the very title of the film.
A Scarce Image from Italian Gothic Horror
Directed by Antonio Margheriti, THE LONG HAIR OF DEATH (1964), originally released as I LUNGHI CAPELLI DELLA MORTE, stars Barbara Steele in the dual role associated with Helen and the mysterious Mary. Set against a world of witchcraft, murder, plague and supernatural vengeance, the film belongs to the remarkable cycle of Italian Gothic productions that established Steele as one of the genre’s most distinctive screen presences.
Shot in atmospheric black and white, the film was photographed by Riccardo Pallottini and filmed extensively at Castello Massimo in Arsoli, near Rome. Steele stars alongside George Ardisson and Halina Zalewska.
For the serious Barbara Steele collector, the scarcity is part of the attraction. Photographic imagery from THE LONG HAIR OF DEATH is encountered far less frequently than material from several of Steele’s better-known Gothic films, making a striking character portrait such as this particularly compelling.
But ultimately it is Steele’s face that makes the photograph exceptional—the enormous eyes, cascading dark hair and unforgettable expression encapsulate the visual mystique that made her an enduring icon of Italian Gothic horror.
