Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula fixes his penetrating gaze forward in this commanding black-and-white publicity photograph from DRACULA (1931), both hands suspended in the controlled hypnotic gesture that became inseparable from his interpretation of the vampire. Immaculately dressed in white tie, waistcoat and evening clothes, Lugosi generates menace almost entirely through his eyes, posture and deliberately poised hands, creating a remarkable visual distillation of the aristocratic Dracula that transformed screen-vampire imagery.

Directed by Tod Browning for Universal and photographed by Karl Freund, DRACULA stars Bela Lugosi alongside Helen Chandler, David Manners, Dwight Frye and Edward Van Sloan. Lugosi had already established Count Dracula on the Broadway stage before bringing the character to film, where his hypnotic gaze, formal evening dress, cape and distinctive hand gestures became extraordinarily influential elements of the screen Dracula tradition.

Carefully restored from original studio-issued archival material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the archival material. Lugosi’s penetrating stare, unmistakable hypnotic hands and elegant white-tie costume make this an exceptional image for Bela Lugosi, DRACULA, Universal Monsters, classic vampire and horror-cinema collectors.
