Christopher Lee as Count Dracula stands alone on the Castle Dracula moat set during production of the climactic finale of DRACULA: PRINCE OF DARKNESS (1966), dwarfed by the large motion-picture camera and elevated working platform positioned above him at Bray Studios. The immense camera equipment, surrounding castle architecture and Lee’s solitary black-caped figure provide an extraordinary view of the practical filmmaking behind Dracula’s frozen-moat demise, transforming a famous Hammer Horror sequence into a revealing production document.

Directed by Terence Fisher and photographed by Michael Reed, DRACULA: PRINCE OF DARKNESS was filmed at Bray Studios in 1965, with Bernard Robinson as production designer, Don Mingaye as art director, Cece Cooney operating the camera and Roy Ashton responsible for makeup. In the finale, Father Sandor shoots through the ice beneath Dracula, sending the Count into the freezing moat surrounding his castle. Filming the sequence was unusually hazardous: Lee lost one of his red contact lenses on the salt-covered set, while stunt double Eddie Powell performed Dracula’s underwater descent beneath the false ice and reportedly struggled to locate the breathing apparatus placed below the surface.

Carefully restored from original studio-issued archival material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the archival material. The towering camera apparatus, Bray Studios Castle Dracula set and unmistakable view of Lee preparing the frozen-moat finale make this an especially significant image for CHRISTOPHER LEE, DRACULA: PRINCE OF DARKNESS, Hammer Horror, Bray Studios and classic filmmaking-history collectors.
