COLIN CLIVE, BORIS KARLOFF and DWIGHT FRYE occupy the center of Henry Frankenstein’s monumental laboratory in this spectacular wide-view photograph from FRANKENSTEIN (1931), photographed by ROMAN FREULICH. Karloff’s heavily bandaged Monster lies upon the experimental platform as Clive’s Henry Frankenstein and Frye’s Fritz work amid towering electrical apparatus, suspended equipment, cables, chains and massive brick architecture, while Mae Clarke, John Boles and Edward Van Sloan observe from across the chamber. The extraordinary scale makes the laboratory itself nearly as commanding a presence as the characters within it.
Directed by James Whale for Universal Pictures, FRANKENSTEIN stars Clive as Henry Frankenstein, Karloff as the Monster and Frye as Fritz, alongside Mae Clarke as Elizabeth, John Boles as Victor Moritz and Edward Van Sloan as Dr. Waldman. The creation sequence surrounds the Monster with the elaborate electrical equipment devised by Kenneth Strickfaden, whose experimental machinery became inseparable from the visual identity of Frankenstein’s laboratory. This composition is documented as a Universal studio-release photograph by Roman Freulich, with archival key-set number 310-1-24.
Carefully restored from archival photographic materials and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the original studio-issued archival material. The sweeping view of Strickfaden’s machinery, towering laboratory architecture, bandaged Monster and assembled principal characters makes this an exceptional visual record of the creation sequence and a distinctive collectible for admirers of FRANKENSTEIN, Universal Monsters and the history of cinematic special effects.
