Dieter Eppler appears as the Vampire Baron in this wonderfully atmospheric black-and-white publicity photograph from SLAUGHTER OF THE VAMPIRES (1962), originally released in Italy as LA STRAGE DEI VAMPIRI. Hidden within the castle’s dark basement, the vampire slowly rises from his wooden coffin, surrounded by rough stone walls and the shadowed remnants of the underground chamber.

DIETER EPPLER - SLAUGHTER OF THE VAMPIRES (1962) Vampire Rises from Coffin Rare Italian Gothic Horror Photo

The setting gives this photograph much of its Gothic character. Eppler lies within the confined coffin as its massive wooden lid rests open beside him, while barrels and heavy masonry crowd the foreground. The deliberately cramped composition creates the impression of discovering the vampire within a secret burial place concealed beneath the castle.

Eppler’s appearance makes the moment especially eerie. Dressed formally in black with a white shirtfront, the Vampire Baron stares upward with an unnaturally rigid expression as his hands emerge over the edge of the coffin. The contrast between his aristocratic clothing and the primitive stone surroundings reinforces one of the enduring visual traditions of European vampire cinema: an elegant supernatural predator concealed within an ancient, decaying environment.

SLAUGHTER OF THE VAMPIRES is a 1962 Italian Gothic horror film written and directed by Roberto Mauri. Set in 19th-century Austria, the story follows newlyweds Wolfgang and Louise as their home and marriage are invaded by a mysterious Vampire Baron. After Louise falls under the vampire’s influence, Wolfgang is drawn into an increasingly desperate supernatural struggle.

Originally released as LA STRAGE DEI VAMPIRI, the film later reached American audiences under the evocative title CURSE OF THE BLOOD GHOULS. Its combination of aristocratic vampires, hidden crypts, old castles and romantic tragedy places it firmly within the rich cycle of Italian Gothic horror produced during the early 1960s.

For collectors of classic vampire cinema, this photograph captures one of the genre’s most enduring images: the vampire awakening within his coffin. The rough subterranean chamber, heavy wooden lid, surrounding barrels and Dieter Eppler’s slowly emerging figure give this particular interpretation a distinctly atmospheric Italian Gothic character.

Carefully restored and professionally printed from archival source material, this museum-quality photograph is a distinctive collectible for admirers of Dieter Eppler, SLAUGHTER OF THE VAMPIRES, LA STRAGE DEI VAMPIRI, CURSE OF THE BLOOD GHOULS, Roberto Mauri, Italian Gothic horror, classic vampire cinema and rare 1960s European horror photography.
