INGRID PITT fills the frame as Carmilla Karnstein in this ferocious color close-up from THE VAMPIRE LOVERS (1970), her mouth opened and blue eyes widened in an expression of raw supernatural fury. Tousled dark hair and the almost complete absence of surrounding detail concentrate the composition entirely on Pitt’s face, stripping away Carmilla’s cultivated elegance and revealing the predatory intensity beneath her seductive appearance. The image gives Pitt’s physical performance extraordinary immediacy and a markedly different identity from the film’s bloodied or romantic vampire imagery.

Directed by ROY WARD BAKER, THE VAMPIRE LOVERS was an American International–Hammer Films production adapted from Sheridan Le Fanu’s CARMILLA, with Pitt appearing under the identities Mircalla, Marcilla and Carmilla Karnstein. The film launched Hammer’s Karnstein Trilogy and paired Pitt with Peter Cushing, Madeline Smith, Pippa Steel, Kate O’Mara and George Cole, while Moray Grant’s Technicolor cinematography helped establish its distinctive early-1970s Gothic visual character.

Carefully restored from archival photographic materials and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the original archival source. The combination of INGRID PITT’s Carmilla characterization, wide-eyed expression and extreme facial close-up gives this photograph a distinctive identity for collectors of THE VAMPIRE LOVERS, Hammer Horror, the Karnstein Trilogy and classic British vampire cinema.
