INGRID PITT – THE VAMPIRE LOVERS (1970) Marcilla Red Gown at Moor Park Mansion Photo
Limited Edition Photograph (learn more)

INGRID PITT appears as Marcilla Karnstein in her striking crimson-red gown in this color photograph from THE VAMPIRE LOVERS (1970), posed against the monumental pale stone architecture of Moor Park Mansion in Hertfordshire. The flowing red costume stands in dramatic contrast to the massive Portland-stone column and masonry surrounding her, creating an unusually architectural Hammer image in which Marcilla’s vivid presence dominates the restrained classical setting. The combination of identifiable costume, character and documented filming location gives this photograph a particularly strong visual and historical identity.
Directed by ROY WARD BAKER for Hammer Films and American International Pictures, THE VAMPIRE LOVERS introduces Pitt’s vampire under the identities Mircalla, Marcilla and Carmilla Karnstein. Marcilla first enters the story at General Spielsdorf’s ball wearing a red gown before remaining at his estate and turning her attention toward Laura. Moor Park Mansion served as General Spielsdorf’s residence, making its grand Palladian architecture directly connected to Marcilla’s first major section of the film; the production was filmed from January to March 1970 at Elstree Studios and Hertfordshire locations.
Carefully restored from archival photographic materials and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the original archival source. The combination of INGRID PITT as Marcilla, her distinctive red gown and the documented Moor Park Mansion setting gives this photograph a compelling identity for collectors of THE VAMPIRE LOVERS, Hammer Horror, the Karnstein Trilogy and classic British vampire cinema photography.
