A ferocious Hammer vampire image for the serious horror collector, capturing Katya Wyeth as Mircalla Karnstein immediately after sinking her fangs into Count Karnstein in TWINS OF EVIL (1971).
Her mouth hangs open to reveal enormous vampire fangs as fresh blood runs across her lips and down her chin, while Damien Thomas fills the foreground as the newly attacked Count. Savage, theatrical and almost shockingly intimate, this is Hammer Horror imagery at its most visually uninhibited.
The close camera angle makes the photograph extraordinarily effective. Damien Thomas is seen primarily from behind, forcing the viewer’s attention directly toward Wyeth’s face as she stares past him with wide eyes, exposed fangs and blood still dripping from her mouth.
There is nowhere else to look.
The expression is what makes the image particularly memorable. Mircalla appears almost exhilarated by the attack, creating a combination of beauty, blood and supernatural menace that perfectly reflects the more provocative direction of Hammer’s early-1970s vampire productions.
For the dedicated Hammer collector, the photograph also preserves an important moment in the Karnstein mythology. Mircalla Karnstein is not simply another vampire appearing within the story—her encounter with Count Karnstein helps unleash the vampiric evil that drives the events of TWINS OF EVIL.
The image captures the aftermath at extraordinarily close range. The oversized fangs remain completely exposed, blood stains Mircalla’s lips and chin, and Thomas’s proximity makes the viewer feel almost physically trapped inside the encounter.
It is less a conventional publicity portrait than a concentrated explosion of Hammer vampire iconography.
The photograph is reproduced from source slide material preserved in the KissMeMonster archive, adding another dimension for collectors interested not merely in the finished image but in the photographic materials through which classic cinema publicity was originally preserved and distributed.
TWINS OF EVIL is a 1971 British Gothic horror film directed by John Hough and starring Peter Cushing as Gustav Weil, Damien Thomas as Count Karnstein, Mary and Madeleine Collinson as Maria and Frieda Gellhorn, and Katya Wyeth as Countess Mircalla Karnstein.
The film forms the third and final entry in Hammer’s Karnstein Trilogy, following THE VAMPIRE LOVERS (1970) and LUST FOR A VAMPIRE (1971). Drawing upon the Karnstein mythology inspired by J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s CARMILLA, the film combines vampirism with witch hunting, religious fanaticism and Hammer’s distinctive mixture of Gothic atmosphere and sensuality.
Katya Wyeth’s Mircalla provides a direct connection to that larger Karnstein vampire lineage. Her encounter with Count Karnstein becomes a pivotal supernatural event, bringing the ancestral vampiric presence directly into his world.
For a collector building a serious TWINS OF EVIL or Hammer vampire archive, this photograph delivers almost everything the genre promises in a single extraordinary frame: Mircalla Karnstein, exposed fangs, fresh blood, Count Karnstein and the immediate aftermath of the bite. It is frightening, provocative and unmistakably Hammer.
Carefully restored and professionally printed from archival source material, this museum-quality photograph is a distinctive collectible for admirers of Katya Wyeth, Damien Thomas, TWINS OF EVIL, the Karnstein Trilogy and classic Hammer vampire cinema.
