KING KONG (1933) Skull Island Log Chasm Attack Rare Pre-Production Concept Artwork
Limited Edition Photograph (learn more)

King Kong confronts the Venture expedition high above a Skull Island chasm in this extraordinary pre-production concept image for KING KONG (1933), as the men desperately struggle to survive upon a massive fallen log. Kong looms from the dense foliage at one end while the tiny human figures balance above the abyss and the primeval jungle closes around them. The precarious bridge, impossible drop and overwhelming scale turn the entire composition into pure adventure and terror.
Directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, KING KONG brought Skull Island to life through an extraordinary combination of design, miniature work and Willis O’Brien’s pioneering stop-motion effects. Mario Larrinaga and Byron L. Crabbe were important contributors to the film’s visual-development work, helping imagine the fantastic environments, scale and action required for sequences with no real-world photographic equivalent. Artwork such as this demonstrates how the relationship between Kong, human figures and the impossible landscape could be resolved visually before the finished effects photography began.
Carefully restored from original studio-issued archival material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality image is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the archival material. The diagonal log, vertiginous chasm, dense prehistoric jungle and towering presence of Kong create a distinctive collectible for KING KONG, Mario Larrinaga, Byron L. Crabbe, Willis O’Brien and historic motion-picture concept-art collectors.
