Robert Hossein and Marie-France Pisier are captured in this haunting black-and-white photograph from LE VAMPIRE DE DÜSSELDORF (1965), also released as THE VAMPIRE OF DÜSSELDORF. Hossein appears as Peter Kürten crouched over Pisier’s Anna in a stark nighttime murder scene, photographed from a remarkable elevated perspective that transforms the moment into an unforgettable study of darkness, isolation and violence.

ROBERT HOSSEIN & MARIE-FRANCE PISIER - THE VAMPIRE OF DÜSSELDORF (1965) Overhead Murder Scene Rare Crime Noir Photo

The extraordinary composition is deceptively simple. Kürten and Anna occupy only a relatively small portion of the frame while enormous areas of darkness surround them. A broad band of illumination cuts horizontally through the scene, isolating the two figures against the otherwise nearly empty nighttime environment.

Hossein’s fedora tilts downward, largely concealing Kürten’s face as he bends over Anna. Pisier lies stretched across the pavement beneath him, one shoe separated from her foot and lying nearby—a small but disturbing visual detail that intensifies the aftermath of violence without requiring anything graphic.

The elevated camera angle makes the scene particularly unusual. Rather than placing the viewer alongside the characters, the photograph looks down upon them from a detached distance. Kürten and Anna appear almost swallowed by the surrounding darkness, reinforcing the sense of isolation that permeates the film.

Light and negative space become as important as the actors themselves. Large areas of near-black emptiness dominate the composition while the illuminated pavement creates stark geometric divisions across the frame. The result is simultaneously cinematic and almost abstract, demonstrating the powerful crime-noir visual language employed in the production.

LE VAMPIRE DE DÜSSELDORF is a 1965 European psychological crime thriller directed by Robert Hossein, who also stars as Peter Kürten. Marie-France Pisier portrays Anna, the cabaret singer whose relationship with Kürten becomes central to the film’s increasingly disturbing psychological narrative.

The film draws inspiration from the historical Peter Kürten, the German serial killer whose crimes terrorized Düsseldorf during the late 1920s. Despite its title, the film is not a supernatural vampire story; its name derives from the notorious nickname associated with the historical murderer.

Hossein’s direction frequently uses architecture, darkness, distance and carefully controlled composition to create psychological unease. This photograph is a particularly striking example. With little more than two figures, pavement, shadow and a single abandoned shoe, the image creates an extraordinary atmosphere of menace.

For collectors, this photograph stands apart not simply because of the dramatic scene it depicts, but because of the way that scene has been photographed. The elevated perspective, enormous negative space, stark illumination and isolated figures create a haunting image that can be appreciated both as a document from LE VAMPIRE DE DÜSSELDORF and as an exceptional example of 1960s European crime-noir photography.

Carefully restored and professionally printed from archival source material, this museum-quality photograph is a distinctive collectible for admirers of Robert Hossein, Marie-France Pisier, LE VAMPIRE DE DÜSSELDORF, European crime noir, psychological thrillers and atmospheric black-and-white cinematography.
