Sean Connery and Ursula Andress are captured during an wonderfully informal production moment in this rare black-and-white behind-the-scenes photograph from DR. NO (1962). Standing barefoot on location, Connery combs his hair while a crew member holds a small mirror in front of him. Seated nearby, Andress looks upward toward Connery as other members of the production can be seen in the background, creating a fascinating candid record of the activity surrounding the making of the first James Bond film.

SEAN CONNERY & URSULA ANDRESS - DR. NO (1962) Rare Mirror & Hair Grooming Behind-the-Scenes James Bond 007 Photo

The photograph offers a wonderful contrast to the polished screen image that would soon define Sean Connery as Agent 007. Instead of the immaculate tuxedo, tailored suits and carefully controlled appearance of James Bond, Connery is seen barefoot with his trousers rolled up, casually grooming his hair between filming while Andress relaxes beside him.

Ursula Andress appears as Honey Ryder, the shell diver whose unforgettable introduction from the Caribbean sea became one of the defining moments not only of DR. NO but of the entire James Bond franchise. Here, however, Andress is seen completely outside that famous finished-film imagery, providing collectors with an intimate glimpse of the performers during production.

Directed by Terence Young and produced by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for Eon Productions, DR. NO introduced Sean Connery as Ian Fleming’s James Bond and launched what would become one of cinema’s longest-running franchises. Extensive location photography in Jamaica gave the film its distinctive tropical identity and produced a remarkable body of candid and behind-the-scenes imagery surrounding the production.

More than sixty years later, photographs such as this provide something the finished film cannot: a visual record of the ordinary moments occurring between takes while the cinematic identity of James Bond 007 was being created.

Carefully restored and professionally printed from archival source material, this museum-quality photograph is a distinctive collectible for admirers of Sean Connery, Ursula Andress, DR. NO, Honey Ryder, James Bond 007, Jamaica production history, Eon Productions, and rare behind-the-scenes photography from the birth of the Bond film franchise.

Although it was the first of the Bond books to be made into a film, Dr. No was the sixth of Fleming's series, beginning with Casino Royale. The film makes a few references to threads from earlier books, and later books in the series as well, such as the criminal organisation SPECTRE, which was not introduced until the 1961 novel Thunderball.

Produced on a low budget, Dr. No was a financial success. While the film received a mixed critical reaction upon release, it has gained a reputation over time as one of the series' best installments. Dr. No also launched a genre of secret agent films that flourished in the 1960s.

The film spawned a comic book adaptation and soundtrack album as part of its promotion and marketing. Many aspects of a typical James Bond film were established in Dr. No. The film begins with an introduction to the character through the view of a gun barrel and a highly stylized main title sequence, both of which were created by Maurice Binder. It also introduced the iconic theme music. Production designer Ken Adam established an elaborate visual style that is one of the hallmarks of the film series.
