Suzanna Leigh as Janet Playfair leads the students of the finishing school through an outdoor dance and exercise class in Hammer Films’ Lust for a Vampire (1971).
This vivid color production image captures one of the film’s most unusual daylight sequences, with Leigh and the young women moving across the lawn in flowing exercise costumes against the elegant country-house backdrop. In the film, the routine is described as a “new idea in physical exercise” based on Greek or Roman dancing, an eccentric touch that immediately establishes Janet Playfair’s role as the school’s gym mistress.
The scene takes place at the girls’ finishing school where visiting author Richard LeStrange encounters the students shortly before becoming increasingly fascinated by the newly arrived Mircalla. Suzanna Leigh’s Janet Playfair is one of the school’s instructors and later becomes increasingly suspicious as deaths and disappearances begin to surround Mircalla and the Karnstein family. Hammer’s official film information confirms Leigh among the principal cast alongside Yutte Stensgaard, Michael Johnson, Ralph Bates and Barbara Jefford.
The handsome building visible behind the dancers is part of Hunton Park at Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire, which served as the exterior location for the girls’ finishing school. Production on Lust for a Vampire ran from July 6 through August 18, 1970, with studio work at Elstree Studios and the finishing-school exteriors photographed at Hunton Park. The expansive lawns and country-house architecture gave Hammer an unusually bright and pastoral setting for a story otherwise dominated by Gothic castles, crypts and vampire mythology.
Directed by Jimmy Sangster from a screenplay by Tudor Gates, Lust for a Vampire was released in 1971 and forms the middle chapter of Hammer’s Karnstein cycle, following The Vampire Lovers (1970) and preceding Twins of Evil (1971). The films draw upon characters and themes originating in Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, while developing Hammer’s distinctive early-1970s combination of Gothic horror, romantic intrigue and vampire sensuality.
Carefully restored from archival source material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the archival source material. Meticulous restoration recovers color balance, tonal detail, clarity, texture and photographic integrity while retaining the authentic character of the original production image.
For collectors of Hammer Horror, Suzanna Leigh and vintage film photography, this photograph is especially appealing for its contrast with the film’s darker imagery: a sunlit, energetic glimpse of the finishing school and its students, preserved from one of Hammer’s most distinctive early-1970s vampire productions.
