Sven Nykvist is captured with three production personnel inside the extraordinary oversized bedroom set created for Roman Polanski’s THE TENANT (1976) in this revealing wide-view black-and-white behind-the-scenes photograph. The enormous bed, towering windows, enlarged doorway, furniture and expansive floor space surround the four men, whose comparatively small scale makes the deliberately exaggerated proportions of the nightmare environment immediately apparent. The wider composition is especially valuable because it exposes far more of the practical set construction than the tighter companion photograph.
Directed by Roman Polanski with cinematography by Sven Nykvist, THE TENANT stars Polanski as Trelkovsky alongside Isabelle Adjani, Melvyn Douglas, Jo Van Fleet and Shelley Winters. Pierre Guffroy served as production designer, with Claude Moesching and Albert Rajau as art directors, and the apartment building and interiors were extensively reconstructed at the Épinay studios to permit Polanski precise control over camera movement, scale and manipulated perspective. The production’s enlarged bedroom elements visually transform Trelkovsky’s surroundings into a nightmarish environment as his psychological stability collapses.
Carefully restored from original studio-issued archival material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the archival material. The expansive view of the giant bedroom, visible production personnel and unusually clear documentation of Guffroy’s production design make this a particularly significant image for THE TENANT, Sven Nykvist, Roman Polanski, cinematography, practical set-design and filmmaking-history collectors.

The William Turner by Hahnemühle is one of the most popular papers used in the Giclee printing industry. This is a 310g natural white mould made natural line paper with 100% rag content making it highly archival. It has a slight coarse texture which gives photos and artwork an elegant look. These fine art paper prints (also known as Giclee) are ordered by galleries, individual artists and photographers. The papers and inks are not only archival but use some of the most accurate print technology for full color prints.

Acid-free and lignin-free, these are both face resistant and meet all conservation quality standards set by the Fine Art Trade Guild. Mats are digitally cut for ultimate precision. The window will be 1/8″ smaller than the print dimensions.
