Dreyer created VAMPYR shortly after the transition from silent to sound cinema, developing an intentionally dreamlike visual language of drifting shadows, disorienting perspectives and spectral imagery. Loosely inspired by elements of Sheridan Le Fanu’s IN A GLASS DARKLY, the film follows Allan Gray as he enters a mysterious world haunted by supernatural forces and a female vampire.

Today, VAMPYR is regarded as an important work of early supernatural and vampire cinema, distinguished by cinematographer Rudolph Maté’s ethereal photography and Dreyer’s unconventional approach to atmosphere and narrative. Its eerie visual style remains remarkably distinctive more than nine decades after the film was made.
