William Marshall as Prince Mamuwalde erupts into vampiric fury in this extraordinary color photograph from BLACULA, his bloodied fangs exposed as he grips a terrified woman and closes upon her vulnerable neck. Marshall’s dark cape, ferocious expression and the victim’s dramatically arched pose concentrate the composition on the physical violence of the attack, creating one of the film’s most immediate images of Mamuwalde transformed from dignified African prince into supernatural predator.
William Crain’s BLACULA (1972), produced by Power Productions and released by American International Pictures, stars William Marshall as Prince Mamuwalde/Blacula alongside Vonetta McGee, Denise Nicholas, Thalmus Rasulala and Gordon Pinsent. After Count Dracula curses Mamuwalde with vampirism and entombs him, the prince is released nearly two centuries later in Los Angeles, where his attacks unfold alongside his tragic pursuit of Tina, whom he believes to be the reincarnation of his wife Luva. The film became a landmark intersection of Black American cinema and the classic vampire tradition.
Carefully restored from original studio-issued archival material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the archival material. Marshall’s bloodied fangs, commanding grip, black vampire cape and the victim’s exposed-neck pose create a distinctive collectible for William Marshall, BLACULA, William Crain, American International Pictures and classic blaxploitation horror collectors.
