Yutte Stensgaard appears as Mircalla Karnstein in this striking color photograph from Lust for a Vampire (1971), standing beside weathered brickwork and dense green foliage in a flowing lavender-blue nightgown. Her long blonde hair falls loosely over her shoulders as she looks intently beyond the frame, while the gathered bodice, high waist and soft folds of the costume give the image an elegant period quality. The muted violet-blue fabric contrasts beautifully with the earthy brick and greenery, creating an unusually luminous portrait of Stensgaard in one of her most celebrated Hammer Horror roles.

The photograph is especially appealing for its combination of natural surroundings and Gothic atmosphere. Rather than relying on a crypt, candlelit chamber or overt vampire imagery, the composition places Mircalla in daylight beside aged masonry and vegetation. Her alert expression and still posture introduce a subtle sense of tension, while the softness of the nightgown and blonde hair emphasizes the deceptively innocent appearance central to the character.

Released in 1971, Lust for a Vampire was directed by Jimmy Sangster for Hammer Film Productions from a screenplay by Tudor Gates. Yutte Stensgaard stars as Mircalla / Carmilla Karnstein alongside Ralph Bates as Giles Barton, Suzanna Leigh as Janet Playfair, Michael Johnson as Richard Lestrange, Barbara Jefford as Countess Herritzen and Mike Raven as Count Karnstein.

The film is the second installment in Hammer’s Karnstein Trilogy, following The Vampire Lovers (1970) and preceding Twins of Evil (1971). All three films draw upon the vampire mythology associated with Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1872 novella Carmilla, although each develops the Karnstein story in its own way.

In Lust for a Vampire, Stensgaard’s Mircalla is the reincarnated Carmilla, restored by the Karnstein family and introduced into an exclusive girls’ school. Her beauty and apparent innocence conceal her vampiric identity, making the contrast between outward refinement and supernatural danger central to the character. Stensgaard’s blonde appearance also gives her interpretation of Carmilla a distinctly different visual character from Ingrid Pitt’s portrayal in The Vampire Lovers.

The role became Yutte Stensgaard’s defining association with Hammer Horror and remains the performance for which she is most familiar to collectors of British Gothic and vampire cinema. Her portrayal belongs to Hammer’s increasingly sensual early-1970s period, when the studio combined traditional Gothic settings with a more contemporary approach to screen sexuality and horror.

This photograph captures that duality particularly well. There are no visible fangs, blood or supernatural effects; instead, Mircalla appears almost serene in her flowing costume and pastoral surroundings. For viewers familiar with the film, that apparent innocence creates its own tension, since the character’s elegant exterior conceals the predatory identity of Carmilla Karnstein.

Carefully restored from historic photographic source material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the source. Meticulous restoration recovers facial detail, hair texture, costume folds, natural color balance, brickwork and background detail while retaining the distinctive character of the original color photograph.

For collectors of Yutte Stensgaard, Lust for a Vampire and Hammer Horror, this is an especially attractive image of Mircalla / Carmilla Karnstein—Stensgaard standing in her lavender-blue nightgown beside weathered brick and foliage, preserving the combination of beauty, mystery and Gothic sensuality that made her portrayal one of the memorable images of Hammer’s Karnstein vampire cycle.
