King Kong erupts from captivity during the New York exhibition in this extraordinary pre-production concept image for KING KONG (1933), towering above the interior as terrified spectators flee in every direction. His enormous arms rise above shattered restraints and overturned furnishings while the tiny human figures below transform every element of the scene into a measure of Kong’s overwhelming scale. The carefully staged spectacle has become absolute chaos—the “Eighth Wonder of the World” can no longer be contained.

Directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, KING KONG transformed Kong’s journey from Skull Island captivity to New York exhibition into one of cinema’s defining reversals. Presented to an audience as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” Kong breaks free and turns modern civilization into another environment unable to control him. Mario Larrinaga and Byron L. Crabbe were among the artists associated with the film’s visual-development work, helping conceive the fantastic environments, scale and dramatic action that would later be translated into the finished film through elaborate miniature and effects photography.

Carefully restored from original studio-issued archival material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality image is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the archival material. The towering Kong, collapsing exhibition space, overturned furniture and crowds scattering beneath him create a distinctive collectible for KING KONG, RKO, Mario Larrinaga, Byron L. Crabbe, Willis O’Brien and historic motion-picture concept-art collectors.
