A remarkable Hammer cast portrait brings Ingrid Pitt, Peter Cushing and Dawn Addams together at London’s Savoy Hotel just before production of THE VAMPIRE LOVERS. With all three stars facing the camera, this January 1970 press photograph preserves an unusually intimate moment from the promotional beginnings of one of Hammer’s most celebrated vampire films.
Photographed at the Savoy Hotel in London on January 13, 1970, the beautifully composed image places Peter Cushing between Ingrid Pitt and Dawn Addams. Pitt would portray Mircalla/Marcilla/Carmilla Karnstein, Cushing General Spielsdorf, and Addams the Countess.
Three Stars at the Beginning of a Hammer Classic
The Savoy gathering preceded production of THE VAMPIRE LOVERS, Roy Ward Baker’s adaptation of J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s CARMILLA. Produced by Hammer Film Productions in association with American International Pictures, the film would become the first installment of Hammer’s Karnstein Trilogy.
There is a wonderful contrast between the photograph and the film these performers were preparing to make. Here, Pitt, Cushing and Addams appear relaxed and smiling, far removed from the predatory vampires, death and Gothic menace that would define their characters on screen.
For collectors, that contrast gives the photograph exceptional historical character. This is not simply an image from THE VAMPIRE LOVERS—it documents three of its stars together at the very beginning of the production’s public history.

The William Turner by Hahnemühle is one of the most popular papers used in the Giclee printing industry. This is a 310g natural white mould made natural line paper with 100% rag content making it highly archival. It has a slight coarse texture which gives photos and artwork an elegant look. These fine art paper prints (also known as Giclee) are ordered by galleries, individual artists and photographers. The window will be 1/8″ smaller than the print dimensions.
