PETER CUSHING, SUSAN DENBERG, producer ANTHONY NELSON KEYS and director TERENCE FISHER walk together at Frensham Ponds during production of FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN (1967) in this candid black-and-white behind-the-scenes photograph. Cushing remains dressed as Baron Victor Frankenstein in top hat and cape while Denberg, Keys and Fisher accompany him across the location, with the imposing guillotine structure clearly visible in the distance. Bringing the film’s two principal stars together with its producer, director and a major piece of location scenery gives the photograph exceptional documentary value as a record of Hammer filmmaking in progress.
Directed by TERENCE FISHER and produced by ANTHONY NELSON KEYS for Hammer Film Productions and Seven Arts, FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN was filmed in 1966, with Frensham Ponds near Farnham, Surrey serving as the location for its guillotine sequences. The guillotine is central to the film’s story: the opening establishes Hans’s childhood trauma through his father’s execution, and years later Hans himself is wrongly condemned and executed there before Baron Frankenstein transfers his captured soul into Christina, played by SUSAN DENBERG. The photograph therefore connects the principal cast and filmmakers directly with one of the production’s most important physical locations and narrative motifs.
Carefully restored from archival photographic materials and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the original archival source. The combination of PETER CUSHING, SUSAN DENBERG, ANTHONY NELSON KEYS, TERENCE FISHER, the documented Frensham Ponds filming location and visible guillotine makes this a particularly distinctive production photograph for collectors of Hammer Films, the Hammer Frankenstein series, British Gothic horror and classic behind-the-scenes cinema photography.
