Sean Connery and Ursula Andress share a wonderfully spontaneous moment in this very rare color behind-the-scenes publicity photograph from DR. NO (1962). Photographed on location in Jamaica, Connery smiles broadly while Andress bends forward laughing beside him, capturing the two stars completely removed from the tension and danger surrounding James Bond and Honey Ryder in the finished film.
SEAN CONNERY & URSULA ANDRESS - DR. NO (1962) Rare Laughing Candid Jamaica Behind-the-Scenes James Bond 007 Photo
Original studio caption information identifies the photograph with the Jamaican production of DR. NO and associates the setting with action occurring near the conclusion of the film. Production activity remains visible around the performers, giving the photograph the unmistakable character of an informal moment preserved during filming rather than a conventional posed studio portrait.
That spontaneity is what makes the image particularly appealing. Connery and Andress became two of the defining faces of 1960s popular cinema through DR. NO, yet here the carefully constructed personas of Agent 007 and Honey Ryder disappear. Instead, the photograph captures two performers laughing together amid the practical surroundings of a major location production.
Directed by Terence Young and produced by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for Eon Productions, DR. NO introduced Sean Connery as Ian Fleming’s James Bond and Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder. The film’s extensive Jamaican locations became fundamental to its visual identity, while Andress’s emergence from the Caribbean sea created one of the most enduring images in the history of the Bond franchise.
More than six decades later, candid production photographs such as this provide a fascinating counterpoint to the polished world seen on screen—a fleeting, informal moment preserved during the making of the film that launched James Bond 007 as a global cinematic phenomenon.
Carefully restored and professionally printed from archival source material, this museum-quality photograph is a distinctive collectible for admirers of Sean Connery, Ursula Andress, DR. NO, Honey Ryder, James Bond 007, Jamaica production history, Eon Productions, and rare behind-the-scenes photography from the birth of the Bond film franchise.
Although it was the first of the Bond books to be made into a film, Dr. No was the sixth of Fleming's series, beginning with Casino Royale. The film makes a few references to threads from earlier books, and later books in the series as well, such as the criminal organisation SPECTRE, which was not introduced until the 1961 novel Thunderball. Produced on a low budget, Dr. No was a financial success.
While the film received a mixed critical reaction upon release, it has gained a reputation over time as one of the series' best installments. Dr. No also launched a genre of secret agent films that flourished in the 1960s.
The film spawned a comic book adaptation and soundtrack album as part of its promotion and marketing. Many aspects of a typical James Bond film were established in Dr. No.
The film begins with an introduction to the character through the view of a gun barrel and a highly stylized main title sequence, both of which were created by Maurice Binder. It also introduced the iconic theme music. Production designer Ken Adam established an elaborate visual style that is one of the hallmarks of the film series.
