A spectacular werewolf image from THE HOWLING captures Rob Bottin’s celebrated creature almost emerging from darkness, its snarling face and massive form illuminated by narrow bands of cold light. The venetian-blind shadows cutting across the werewolf’s fur give the photograph an exceptionally sinister cinematic quality, preserving one of the distinctive creature designs that helped redefine werewolf horror for a new generation.
Rather than revealing the creature in flat publicity lighting, this remarkable composition allows darkness to become part of the image. The werewolf’s pointed ears, exposed teeth, clawed hands and dense fur emerge selectively from the shadows, while the streaks of light create an almost graphic pattern across its body. The creature is visible—but never comfortably revealed.
Rob Bottin and a New Generation of Werewolves
Directed by Joe Dante and adapted from Gary Brandner’s novel, THE HOWLING (1981) stars Dee Wallace, Patrick Macnee, Dennis Dugan and Robert Picardo. The film became an important entry in the remarkable resurgence of werewolf cinema at the beginning of the 1980s.
Central to its enduring reputation are Rob Bottin’s elaborate practical creature and transformation effects. Bottin and his effects team rejected the comparatively restrained werewolf imagery of earlier decades in favor of towering, overtly monstrous creatures whose physical transformations could unfold before the camera.
Released during the same extraordinary year as AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON and WOLFEN, THE HOWLING helped establish 1981 as a landmark moment in the evolution of cinematic werewolves.
What distinguishes this photograph is the marriage of creature design and cinematography. Bottin’s formidable werewolf provides the physical spectacle, but the sharply patterned illumination allows the imagination to complete what the darkness conceals.

The William Turner by Hahnemühle is one of the most popular papers used in the Giclee printing industry. This is a 310g natural white mould made natural line paper with 100% rag content making it highly archival. It has a slight coarse texture which gives photos and artwork an elegant look. These fine art paper prints (also known as Giclee) are ordered by galleries, individual artists and photographers.
