One of the most instantly recognizable images in modern horror cinema: Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance staring through the shattered bathroom door in THE SHINING. His manic grin, fixed eyes and face compressed between the splintered wood capture the unforgettable “Here’s Johnny!” sequence—an extraordinary photograph for collectors of Stanley Kubrick, Jack Nicholson and landmark horror cinema.

The composition is remarkably simple and extraordinarily effective. Nicholson’s face fills the opening he has hacked through the door as Jack Torrance terrorizes Wendy, transforming the broken wooden frame into a claustrophobic border around his expression. Few publicity images require so little explanation: the moment is immediately identifiable with THE SHINING.

An Iconic Moment in THE SHINING

Directed and produced by Stanley Kubrick and adapted by Kubrick and Diane Johnson from Stephen King’s novel, THE SHINING (1980) stars Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, Shelley Duvall as Wendy, Danny Lloyd as Danny and Scatman Crothers as Dick Hallorann.

As the isolated Overlook Hotel exerts an increasingly destructive influence upon Jack, his deterioration culminates in his pursuit of Wendy and Danny through the hotel. During the celebrated bathroom-door sequence, Jack hacks through the door with an axe, pushes his face through the opening and delivers the improvised line, “Here’s Johnny!”

The photograph freezes that fleeting screen moment at precisely the point where Nicholson’s performance, Kubrick’s claustrophobic imagery and the physical destruction of the set converge. The splintered doorway leaves almost nothing visible except Jack Torrance himself, making Nicholson’s expression the entire focus of the image.

For the horror-film collector, this goes beyond a conventional Jack Nicholson portrait—it preserves one of the signature visual moments of THE SHINING and one of the most recognizable images of his career.
