Hammer’s The Vampire Lovers (1970) is represented through this provocative original British pre-production artwork, dominated by an enormous green female face, blood-red lips and dramatic vampire imagery emerging from deep black shadow. The raised female figure, blood detail and sensual lower vignette immediately convey the fusion of Gothic menace and eroticism that made the film one of Hammer Horror’s defining vampire productions of the early 1970s.
The design has exceptional visual impact because it reduces the film’s themes to a few powerful elements. The oversized green face becomes the central supernatural presence, while the stark black background intensifies the blood-red mouth and dark eye makeup. Above and below, the secondary figures introduce fear, seduction and vampiric threat, creating a composition that feels both theatrical and confrontational.
The bold Vampire Lovers title anchors the image near the lower center, while the surrounding artwork pushes the viewer’s attention upward into the dominant female face. This vertical structure gives the design a distinctly pre-production quality: less concerned with conventional cast presentation and more focused on establishing atmosphere, danger and immediate visual identity.
Released in 1970, The Vampire Lovers was directed by Roy Ward Baker and stars Ingrid Pitt as Carmilla Karnstein, alongside Peter Cushing, George Cole, Kate O’Mara, Madeline Smith and Douglas Wilmer. Adapted from Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, the film became one of Hammer Film Productions’ most important early-1970s vampire pictures.
The production was made in association with American International Pictures, whose involvement helped encourage a more provocative approach to the film’s marketing and visual presentation. That context is especially relevant to this artwork, which reflects the heightened sensuality and bold promotional style used to distinguish the film from Hammer’s earlier Dracula cycle.
The Vampire Lovers launched what became known as the Karnstein cycle, later continued with Lust for a Vampire (1971) and Twins of Evil (1971). Ingrid Pitt’s Carmilla became the defining figure of the first film, and the combination of female vampirism, Gothic atmosphere and erotic danger gave the production a visual identity unlike anything else Hammer had released at the time.
This pre-production design is particularly compelling because it captures the film at the conceptual stage of its campaign. Rather than simply reproducing finished theatrical poster art, it preserves an earlier promotional idea built around female vampire imagery, blood, shadow and sensual threat, making it especially valuable as a piece of Hammer design history.
KissMeMonster’s 18x24 fine art poster is professionally reproduced on archival Moab Lasal Photo Matte paper, a substantial 21-mil, 310gsm professional-grade stock selected for high-quality photographic and fine art presentation. The matte surface preserves the artwork’s deep blacks, green tonal range, blood-red accents and vintage typography while giving the finished poster a substantial gallery-quality appearance.
For collectors of The Vampire Lovers, Ingrid Pitt and Hammer Films, this is an exceptionally striking piece of British Gothic horror artwork—a provocative pre-production design in which the huge green female face, crimson lips, vampire imagery, sensual lower vignette and stark black background capture the film’s unique blend of eroticism and supernatural menace, making it especially desirable for collectors of Hammer Horror, Karnstein vampire cinema, classic movie poster art and 1970s British horror memorabilia.
