Tom Chantrell’s pre-production artwork for Twins of Evil (1971) transforms Hammer’s vampire film into an explosive vision of fire, erotic danger and Gothic menace, dominated by a towering female figure surrounded by vivid orange and crimson flames. The provocative lower vignette, bold hand-painted imagery and emphatic TWINS OF EVIL title create an unforgettable example of classic Hammer Horror campaign art from one of the studio’s most visually daring periods.

The composition immediately reveals why Chantrell became one of the most important artists associated with British film advertising. Rather than simply illustrating a scene from the film, the artwork distills its themes into a sensational graphic statement: sexuality, vampirism, persecution and supernatural threat compressed into a single vertical design.

The central figure rises dramatically through a field of flame, creating an almost ritualistic image of danger and entrapment. Below, the second female figure introduces another layer of erotic tension, while the strong title lettering and compact “This Is a Hammer Film” device anchor the design firmly within Hammer’s unmistakable promotional identity.

Released in 1971, Twins of Evil was directed by John Hough and became the third film in Hammer’s celebrated Karnstein cycle, following The Vampire Lovers (1970) and Lust for a Vampire (1971). The film stars Peter Cushing as the fanatical Gustav Weil alongside Madeleine Collinson and Mary Collinson as twin sisters Frieda and Maria Gellhorn.

The cast also includes Damien Thomas as Count Karnstein, Dennis Price, David Warbeck, Isobel Black and Kathleen Byron. The story combines vampire mythology with religious fanaticism, repression and moral hypocrisy, creating one of Hammer’s most provocative examinations of the conflict between supernatural evil and human extremism.

Chantrell’s artwork is particularly fascinating because it belongs to the film’s pre-production promotional phase, before the final theatrical campaign was established. Rather than reproducing the finished British Quad artwork, this design preserves an earlier and more provocative visual concept created to generate excitement around the production.

That historical context gives the image unusual collector appeal. Chantrell’s pre-production work often pushed Hammer’s imagery toward a more explicit and sensational style than would ultimately appear in conventional theatrical advertising, allowing these early concepts to preserve a revealing glimpse of how the studio imagined and marketed its films before release.

KissMeMonster’s 18x24 fine art poster is professionally reproduced on archival Moab Lasal Photo Matte paper, a substantial 21-mil, 310gsm professional-grade stock selected for high-quality photographic and fine art presentation. The matte surface preserves the artwork’s deep blacks, fiery orange-red color, painted texture and vintage lettering while giving the finished poster a substantial gallery-quality appearance.

For collectors of Tom Chantrell and Twins of Evil, this is an exceptionally striking piece of Hammer Horror art—a provocative pre-production design in which flames, vampire imagery, erotic danger and bold vintage typography capture the sensational character of Hammer’s Karnstein cycle, making it especially desirable for collectors of Peter Cushing, British horror posters, vampire cinema, classic movie artwork and Hammer Films memorabilia.
