One of Ingrid Pitt’s most visually striking looks from THE VAMPIRE LOVERS, this dramatic image captures the actress in the flowing red gown associated with Marcilla’s arrival in the film. The rich crimson costume against the monumental stone architecture creates an unmistakably Gothic composition—and an especially desirable image for collectors of Hammer’s Karnstein cycle and Ingrid Pitt photography.
Photographed at Moor Park Mansion in Hertfordshire, the location used for General Spielsdorf’s residence, Pitt appears as the mysterious Marcilla, one of the identities assumed by the vampire Mircalla Karnstein. Her floor-length red gown provides the photograph’s dominant visual element, contrasting dramatically with the massive pale stonework behind her.
Hammer Horror and the Karnstein Legacy
Directed by Roy Ward Baker, THE VAMPIRE LOVERS (1970) was produced as a Hammer Films and American International Pictures co-production and adapted from J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s influential 1872 novella CARMILLA. Ingrid Pitt portrays the vampire under the identities Mircalla, Marcilla and Carmilla Karnstein, opposite a cast that includes Peter Cushing, George Cole, Kate O’Mara, Madeline Smith and Dawn Addams.
The film inaugurated Hammer’s Karnstein Trilogy, followed by LUST FOR A VAMPIRE and TWINS OF EVIL in 1971. Its combination of Gothic atmosphere, eroticism and female-centered vampire mythology marked a significant development in Hammer’s early-1970s horror cycle.
For collectors, this photograph is particularly effective because it presents Pitt’s celebrated Carmilla characterization through costume, architecture and color rather than a conventional studio portrait—an elegant visual distillation of the Gothic world that made THE VAMPIRE LOVERS one of Hammer’s most recognizable vampire films.
