An unforgettable Barbara Steele image from the legendary opening of BLACK SUNDAY captures Princess Asa Vajda bound for execution, staring outward with an expression of extraordinary defiance. Moments before the infamous Mask of Satan is driven onto her face, Steele already commands the frame—an exceptional image for collectors of Mario Bava, Italian Gothic horror and Barbara Steele.
Restrained against the execution stake with one arm raised above her, Asa fixes the camera with an intense, unwavering gaze. The stark black-and-white photography, exposed shoulder and rough bindings create a composition that is simultaneously elegant, threatening and unmistakably Gothic. Steele’s expression supplies its real power: Asa appears not defeated, but openly defiant of those preparing to execute her.
The Birth of an Italian Gothic Icon
Mario Bava’s BLACK SUNDAY (1960), originally released in Italy as LA MASCHERA DEL DEMONIO, opens with Princess Asa Vajda and Javutich condemned for witchcraft. Asa curses those responsible for her death before the horrific spiked Mask of Satan is placed over her face and hammered into place. A violent storm subsequently prevents the intended burning from being completed.
Loosely inspired by Nikolai Gogol’s VIY, the film marked Bava’s official feature directorial debut and gave Barbara Steele the dual roles of the malevolent Asa and her descendant Katia. Bava’s extraordinary black-and-white cinematography and Gothic imagery helped make the film a landmark of Italian horror cinema.
For the Barbara Steele collector, this photograph captures something particularly important: the character before the film’s most notorious act of violence. There is no Mask of Satan yet and no supernatural resurrection—only Steele’s face, the execution stake and the defiance that introduces Asa Vajda to Gothic cinema.
