Yutte Stensgaard as Mircalla emerges beneath a weathered stone arch, with grave markers visible beyond her, in this atmospheric color photograph from Hammer Films’ Lust for a Vampire (1971).

Barefoot in a flowing white nightgown edged with delicate purple accents, Stensgaard stands luminous against the shadowed cemetery and autumn-covered ground. The solitary full-length composition creates a striking contrast between Mircalla’s ethereal beauty and the death surrounding the Karnstein legend, capturing the romantic Gothic imagery that became central to Hammer’s vampire films of the period.

In Lust for a Vampire, the Karnstein family resurrects Mircalla / Carmilla Karnstein, who enters a nearby girls’ finishing school and draws those around her into a succession of seductions, disappearances and deaths. Visiting author Richard LeStrange, played by Michael Johnson, becomes dangerously fascinated by her, placing Mircalla at the center of the film’s combination of romantic obsession and supernatural horror.

Directed by Jimmy Sangster from a screenplay by Tudor Gates, Lust for a Vampire was filmed during July and August 1970, with production work at Elstree Studios and location filming at Hunton Park in Hertfordshire. Released in 1971, the film became the middle chapter of Hammer’s Karnstein cycle, following The Vampire Lovers (1970) and preceding Twins of Evil (1971).

The Karnstein films draw upon characters and themes originating in Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, while developing Hammer’s own distinctive interpretation of Gothic vampire mythology. Stensgaard’s Mircalla became one of the most recognizable female vampire figures of early-1970s British horror, and the graveyard imagery seen here places her directly within the dark ancestral world of the Karnstein legend.

Carefully restored from archival source material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the archival source material. Meticulous restoration recovers natural color balance, shadow detail, clarity, texture and photographic integrity while retaining the authentic atmosphere and character of the original color image.

For collectors of Hammer Horror, Yutte Stensgaard and Gothic vampire cinema, this photograph offers an especially atmospheric study of Mircalla within the Karnstein graveyard. The stone arch, visible grave markers, flowing costume and solitary composition create a memorable visual record of one of Hammer’s defining early-1970s vampire productions.
