Yutte Stensgaard radiates pure early-1970s Hammer glamour in this vibrant color publicity photograph associated with LUST FOR A VAMPIRE (1971), captured outdoors in a yellow crochet bikini against a magnificent expanse of green lawn and foliage. Rather than holding a conventional static swimsuit pose, Stensgaard appears caught in motion, smiling broadly as she steps toward the camera—giving the image an unusually spontaneous, energetic quality.
The color combination is spectacular.
Bright yellow against deep natural greens immediately pulls Stensgaard forward from the landscape, while her long crossed stride and sharply defined shadow introduce movement across an otherwise beautifully tranquil setting.
This isn't Mircalla lurking in the Gothic darkness.
This is Yutte Stensgaard—the Hammer glamour star.
Sunshine Outside the Karnstein Shadows
Directed by Jimmy Sangster, LUST FOR A VAMPIRE (1971) stars Yutte Stensgaard as Mircalla Herritzen, an incarnation of Carmilla Karnstein and the supernatural center of Hammer’s second entry in the Karnstein Trilogy.
The film itself belongs unmistakably to Hammer’s world of Gothic vampirism.
This photograph could hardly look further removed from it.
No castle.
No candlelight.
No nightgown.
No supernatural suggestion whatsoever.
Instead, the photographer takes Stensgaard outdoors and allows sunlight, color and personality to define the image.
That contrast is precisely what makes it so collectible.
The yellow crochet bikini is the photograph's immediate visual anchor. Surrounded by darker hedges, trees and richly saturated grass, its warm color separates Stensgaard beautifully from the environment.
Then the pose takes over.
Her body is angled slightly forward.
One leg crosses naturally before the other.
Her arms remain relaxed.
And unlike the carefully controlled glamour poses we've just seen in the Valerie Leon studio portraits, Stensgaard appears to be moving through the photograph rather than simply posing inside it.
That distinction gives the image tremendous vitality.
The long shadow extending across the grass reinforces the sense of bright outdoor sunlight while also creating another strong diagonal through the composition.
Even the landscape contributes layers.
Grass occupies the foreground.
Trimmed hedges establish the middle distance.
Tall trees rise behind them.
And Stensgaard stands directly within that depth, her yellow costume separating her instantly from every shade of green surrounding her.
Simple ingredients. Exceptional visual result.
For the serious collector, however, the WHY extends beyond composition.
Place this beside the Mircalla close-up we just examined.
There, Stensgaard’s enormous blue eyes and unreadable expression create an almost hypnotic stillness.
Here she is smiling.
Moving.
Sunlit.
Completely approachable.
The vampire has disappeared.
And yet both photographs belong to the visual history surrounding the same actress and the same defining Hammer production.
That is exactly why a deep collection becomes interesting.
It doesn't merely document Mircalla Herritzen.
It documents how Yutte Stensgaard was presented around LUST FOR A VAMPIRE.
Gothic heroine.
Mysterious vampire.
Beautiful leading woman.
And here—
HAMMER GLAMOUR GIRL.
The photograph also has tremendous display appeal because its impact does not depend upon recognizing the film.
A Hammer enthusiast sees Yutte Stensgaard immediately.
A collector of 1970s British glamour sees an exceptionally attractive period image.
Someone encountering it from across a room simply sees fantastic color and movement.
That crossover is valuable.
And unlike an overtly Gothic photograph that asks the viewer to enter the world of the film, this one requires almost no explanation.
Sunshine.
Green landscape.
Yellow bikini.
A beautiful actress walking toward the camera with an enormous smile.
The photograph sells its own energy.
Preserved within the KissMeMonster photographic archive, this exceptional color publicity image has been carefully restored to retain the warm yellow tones of Yutte Stensgaard’s period crochet bikini, the richly varied greens of the surrounding lawn, hedges and trees, the strong natural sunlight and the beautifully defined movement of her pose—preserving a vibrant example of early-1970s Hammer glamour associated with LUST FOR A VAMPIRE.
