A spectacular visual centerpiece for the serious Hammer Horror collector, presenting real-life identical twins Mary and Madeleine Collinson together as Maria and Frieda Gellhorn in TWINS OF EVIL (1971).
Dressed in matching golden period costumes against a glowing red-orange background, the sisters stand in beautifully coordinated poses that emphasize their extraordinary resemblance. Rich color, elegant symmetry and two of Hammer’s most recognizable leading women—this is the kind of photograph capable of becoming an immediate focal point within a TWINS OF EVIL collection.
The color composition is exceptional. The warm golden tones of the twins’ dresses work beautifully against the saturated background, while the softer illuminated area at right creates additional depth and prevents the portrait from becoming visually flat.
Then there is the symmetry.
Mary and Madeleine stand side by side with their hands gently clasped before them, long dark hair falling across their shoulders as both gaze away from the camera. Their similar profiles and nearly mirrored positioning immediately exploit the visual concept upon which the film itself was built.
The result is far more sophisticated than a conventional cast publicity photograph. The controlled poses, period costumes, dramatic background and carefully balanced lighting give the image an almost painterly quality—a formal portrait of the Gellhorn twins suspended within Hammer’s Gothic world.
As real-life identical twins portraying fictional twin sisters, Mary and Madeleine Collinson brought a visual authenticity to TWINS OF EVIL that ordinary casting could not reproduce. Yet their physical resemblance serves an important dramatic purpose because Maria and Frieda ultimately follow very different paths.
Maria remains the more innocent sister, while Frieda becomes increasingly fascinated by Count Karnstein and the forbidden world surrounding him. Their almost interchangeable appearance therefore contrasts dramatically with the differences developing between their characters.
That duality is one of the great strengths of this photograph. They appear almost perfectly matched, while the collector knows that beneath that visual symmetry lie two dramatically different destinies.
Mary and Madeleine Collinson were Maltese-born identical twins who achieved international recognition as models and Playboy Playmates before appearing together in TWINS OF EVIL. Their casting provided Hammer with one of the studio’s most distinctive visual pairings of the early 1970s.
TWINS OF EVIL is a 1971 British Gothic horror film directed by John Hough and starring Peter Cushing as Gustav Weil, Damien Thomas as Count Karnstein, and Mary and Madeleine Collinson as Maria and Frieda Gellhorn.
The film forms the third and final entry in Hammer’s Karnstein Trilogy, following THE VAMPIRE LOVERS (1970) and LUST FOR A VAMPIRE (1971). Drawing upon the Karnstein mythology inspired by J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s CARMILLA, the film combines vampirism, religious fanaticism and witch hunting with Hammer’s distinctive Gothic visual style.
For a collector building a serious Hammer or TWINS OF EVIL archive, this photograph delivers something that neither a vampire attack nor a conventional scene still can provide: the Collinson twins presented together as the visual embodiment of the film itself. The brilliant color, matching period costumes and extraordinary twin symmetry make this an exceptionally display-worthy image from Hammer’s Karnstein era.
Carefully restored and professionally printed from archival source material, this museum-quality photograph is a distinctive collectible for admirers of Mary Collinson, Madeleine Collinson, TWINS OF EVIL, the Karnstein Trilogy and classic Hammer Horror.
