A mesmerizing close-up of Catherine Deneuve as Carol Ledoux captures the fragile, inward tension at the heart of REPULSION. Reclining against a pillow with her eyes turned sharply away and lips slightly parted, Deneuve appears beautiful yet profoundly distant—an exquisitely restrained portrait from Roman Polanski’s landmark exploration of psychological isolation and subjective terror.

The intimacy of the composition is extraordinary. Deneuve’s face occupies almost the entire frame, surrounded by cascading blonde hair and soft textures, while her sidelong gaze introduces an immediate sense of unease. There is no conventional horror imagery and no visible threat. The tension exists almost entirely within her expression.

That restraint makes the photograph particularly compelling. Carol appears physically close to the viewer yet psychologically unreachable, reflecting one of the central visual contradictions that gives REPULSION its unsettling power.

Catherine Deneuve at the Center of REPULSION

Directed by Roman Polanski from a screenplay by Polanski and Gérard Brach, REPULSION (1965) stars Catherine Deneuve as Carol Ledoux, a withdrawn young woman whose isolation inside a London apartment becomes increasingly entangled with disturbing perceptions, hallucinations and psychological disintegration.

Ian Hendry, John Fraser, Patrick Wymark and Yvonne Furneaux appear alongside Deneuve, but the film belongs overwhelmingly to Carol’s subjective experience. Polanski repeatedly confines the viewer within her increasingly unstable perception of ordinary surroundings, transforming the apartment—and eventually the familiar objects within it—into sources of profound unease.

Deneuve’s performance is crucial to that effect. Her famously luminous screen presence is deliberately placed in tension with Carol’s detachment and vulnerability, producing images that can appear elegant and deeply unsettling at precisely the same moment.

This portrait distills that contradiction beautifully.

Rather than documenting one of REPULSION’s more overtly disturbing sequences, it captures the psychological territory from which those horrors emerge. The distant gaze, almost motionless pose and extreme proximity of the camera turn a seemingly simple close-up into an unusually evocative character study.

For admirers of Deneuve, Polanski or psychological horror, that quality gives the photograph particular depth. It preserves not merely Catherine Deneuve’s extraordinary beauty, but the controlled ambiguity of one of her most celebrated early performances—an image in which elegance, vulnerability and unease coexist without ever fully revealing what Carol is experiencing.

Preserved within the KissMeMonster photographic archive, this exquisite black-and-white image has been carefully restored to retain the delicate facial detail, luminous skin tones, fine strands of Deneuve’s hair and subtle tonal gradations that give the portrait its remarkable intimacy—preserving the quiet psychological tension of this distinctive image from REPULSION.
