An extraordinary close-up of Robert Picardo as Eddie Quist captures the legendary werewolf transformation from THE HOWLING at one of its most startling intermediate stages.

With luminous predatory eyes, newly emerged fangs and a face suspended disturbingly between human and beast, this visceral image preserves the groundbreaking practical-effects artistry that made Rob Bottin’s transformation sequence a landmark of 1980s horror cinema.

The extreme close-up makes the transformation impossible to escape. Picardo remains recognizably human, yet the enlarged fangs, altered eyes, strained features and unnatural coloration signal that Eddie Quist is rapidly becoming something else. It is precisely this uncomfortable midpoint—neither man nor fully formed werewolf—that gives the image its remarkable power.

The Transformation That Changed Werewolf Cinema

Directed by Joe Dante, THE HOWLING (1981) gave special makeup effects artist Rob Bottin the opportunity to rethink how a human-to-werewolf transformation could be depicted on screen. Rather than relying primarily upon the traditional succession of photographic dissolves, Bottin developed elaborate practical and mechanical effects that allowed Eddie Quist’s features to distort and transform before the camera.

Robert Picardo endured extensive casting and makeup work as Bottin developed progressive stages based upon the actor’s own facial structure. Bottin later explained that he deliberately distorted recognizable characteristics of Picardo’s face into increasingly animalistic forms, creating a transformation that evolved organically from the performer rather than simply covering him with a conventional wolf makeup.

The sequence became one of THE HOWLING’s defining achievements. Joe Dante recalled that a rough version of Picardo’s transformation was sufficiently impressive that Avco Embassy used it to excite exhibitors before the film's release.

That history gives this photograph unusual significance. It doesn't merely show the finished monster—it isolates one of the progressive stages in Bottin’s transformation concept, where Picardo’s human identity remains visible beneath the emerging creature. For enthusiasts of practical effects, that distinction transforms the photograph into a fascinating record of how one of horror cinema’s celebrated transformations was visually constructed.

Released during the extraordinary 1981 resurgence of werewolf cinema, THE HOWLING helped move transformation effects decisively toward elaborate in-camera physical spectacle, while Bottin would soon take his practical-effects experimentation even further with THE THING (1982).

Seen this closely, the photograph becomes more than a frightening image of Eddie Quist—it preserves the intersection of Robert Picardo’s performance and Rob Bottin’s practical-effects ingenuity at the precise moment human features begin surrendering to the monster.

Preserved within the KissMeMonster photographic archive, this remarkable image has been carefully restored to retain the vivid color, extraordinary eye detail, facial texture and dramatic tonal character of the original source, bringing renewed clarity to one of THE HOWLING’s most celebrated achievements in practical horror effects.
