A haunting character portrait of Roman Polanski as Trelkovsky from THE TENANT, preserved in the KissMeMonster archive from the photographic negative. Contemporary Paramount Pictures documentation identifies the image as still T-25-18, giving collectors valuable period provenance for this stark image from one of the defining psychological films of the 1970s.

Polanski is photographed seated alone outdoors in a heavy overcoat and scarf, his hands buried in his pockets and his body tightly contained within the frame. The bare trees, empty chairs and soft background create an austere setting around Trelkovsky, while his direct gaze gives the photograph an unsettling intimacy perfectly suited to the film’s atmosphere of isolation and psychological unease.

Trelkovsky and THE TENANT

Directed by Roman Polanski and adapted by Polanski and Gérard Brach from Roland Topor’s novel LE LOCATAIRE CHIMÉRIQUE, THE TENANT (1976) stars Polanski as Trelkovsky alongside Isabelle Adjani, Melvyn Douglas, Jo Van Fleet and Shelley Winters.

Contemporary Paramount Pictures publicity documentation accompanying the original studio-issued photograph identifies Roman Polanski as Trelkovsky and the photograph as still T-25-18. The period documentation also credits Andrew Braunsberg as producer, Sven Nykvist as director of photography and Pierre Guffroy as production designer.

Often discussed as the concluding film in Polanski’s informal “Apartment Trilogy,” following REPULSION and ROSEMARY’S BABY, THE TENANT transforms the seemingly ordinary experience of apartment living into an increasingly disturbing exploration of identity, paranoia and alienation.

For the collector, the power of this photograph lies in its restraint. There are no overt horror elements and no elaborate set pieces—only Trelkovsky sitting alone, surrounded by empty space. Combined with its documented Paramount still number and archival negative source, it becomes both an evocative character study and a tangible piece of THE TENANT’s photographic history.

This image is reproduced from the archival photographic negative and is not represented as an original 1976 Paramount publicity print.
