Anthony Higgins as Emil, Laurence Payne as Professor Albert Müller and Robert Tayman as Count Mitterhaus are brought together in this ferocious color photograph from the climactic crypt battle in Vampire Circus (1972). The image captures one of the film’s most violent and dramatically compressed moments, with Müller occupying the foreground as Emil erupts behind him in a fanged frenzy, while the partially visible form of Count Mitterhaus remains below, linking all three characters directly to the resurrection struggle at the center of the finale.
The photograph’s power comes from its compressed staging and violent physical energy. Payne’s Müller bends forward in grim concentration, gripping the wooden stake that becomes the decisive object of the entire sequence. Behind him, Higgins’ Emil appears in a burst of movement, his mouth opened wide to reveal his vampire fangs and his red costume blazing against the darker crypt interior. At lower left, the pale face of Mitterhaus emerges from the tomb area below, reinforcing the sense that the battle is unfolding around the Count’s threatened restoration.
The background is equally important. A wall of skulls and bone-like decoration rises behind the performers, giving the scene an unmistakably macabre identity rooted in Hammer horror’s Gothic design tradition. The image is dominated by earthy browns, pale flesh tones and the vivid blood-red of Emil’s costume, creating a palette perfectly suited to the film’s atmosphere of plague, decay and vampiric violence. The result is not simply a scene still, but a concentrated visual summary of the film’s savage final confrontation.
Directed by Robert Young for Hammer Film Productions, Vampire Circus follows the aftermath of Count Mitterhaus’s curse upon the village of Schtettel, where disease, death and vampiric predation accompany the arrival of the sinister circus troupe. Anthony Higgins, credited on screen as Anthony Corlan, plays Emil, one of the Count’s undead followers, while Laurence Payne appears as Professor Albert Müller, the rational but embattled figure who confronts the supernatural threat. Robert Tayman plays Count Mitterhaus, the aristocratic vampire whose revival drives the film’s climax.
This photograph preserves the crucial moment in which Müller seizes the stake associated with Mitterhaus’s body and uses it against Emil. That action destroys Emil, but it also allows the Count to revive, making the stake both a weapon and a catalyst within the scene. Because the image includes Emil, Müller, Count Mitterhaus and the stake itself, it carries unusual narrative richness for a single frame, gathering the essential components of the resurrection sequence into one tightly organized composition.
For collectors of Hammer vampire photography, the image has exceptional appeal because it combines principal characters, strong performance detail and unmistakable Gothic atmosphere. Higgins’ distorted vampiric expression, Payne’s forceful body language, Tayman’s presence within the crypt and the skull-lined background give the photograph a particularly intense identity within late-period Hammer Films imagery.
Carefully restored from historic photographic source material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the source. Restoration recovers facial detail, fang definition, костume texture, skull-wall detail, wood-grain stake texture and shadow depth while maintaining the natural color balance and authentic character of the historic photograph.
