MARTINE BESWICK poses on the edge of a small boat in her distinctive tiger-stripe swimsuit in this elegant black-and-white Bahamas publicity photograph associated with Thunderball (1965). Beswick sits upright with both legs extending into the water, one hand supporting her on the boat as she turns her gaze away from the camera toward the distant shoreline. The patterned one-piece swimsuit provides the strongest visual accent, while the open sea, dramatic cloud formations and low Bahamian buildings give the composition an expansive tropical atmosphere. Compared with a more direct-facing portrait from the same style of promotional photography, this image feels quieter and more contemplative, allowing the surrounding water and sky to become important elements alongside Beswick herself.
The composition is especially effective because the actress remains clearly dominant without filling the entire frame. The boat creates a strong diagonal from the lower right toward Beswick, while the horizontal shoreline and broad sky add depth behind her. Her turned profile and poised posture give the photograph a polished glamour quality without becoming overly posed. For collectors searching for Martine Beswick Thunderball 1965 photography, the combination of her recognizable striped swimwear, Bahamas setting and association with Paula Caplan makes this an especially attractive example of classic 007 Bond Girl publicity imagery. Getty’s Screen Archives collection independently documents Beswick posing in swimwear for Thunderball, confirming this type of promotional photography as part of the film’s surviving visual record.
Directed by Terence Young, Thunderball was the fourth Eon Productions James Bond feature, with Sean Connery as James Bond 007, Claudine Auger as Domino, Adolfo Celi as Emilio Largo, Luciana Paluzzi as Fiona Volpe and Martine Beswick as Paula. AFI confirms Beswick’s role and identifies Nassau and the Bahamas among the production’s principal geographic locations. The film was produced by Kevin McClory, with cinematography by Ted Moore and production design by Ken Adam.
Paula is part of Bond’s intelligence operation in Nassau as his investigation of Largo and the stolen NATO nuclear weapons develops. Although her screen time is relatively concentrated, Beswick became one of the recognizable women associated with Thunderball’s tropical visual identity and extensive promotional campaign. The Bahamas were fundamental to the production: AFI records that the unit relocated to Nassau in March 1965 and photographed numerous scenes there and on surrounding islands, while specialized underwater crews and equipment supported the film’s ambitious water-based sequences.
Thunderball was Beswick’s second appearance in the Bond series. She had previously played Zora in From Russia with Love, also directed by Terence Young, making her one of the actresses who returned to the early Connery-era series in a different role. AFI specifically credits her as Zora in the 1963 production.
For the collector, this image is less about narrative action than about the sophisticated promotional world surrounding Bond in the mid-1960s. Beswick’s patterned swimsuit, small boat and open water combine to create a photograph immediately associated with Thunderball’s glamorous Bahamas identity while remaining visually distinct from an actual scene still.
Carefully restored from historic photographic source material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the source. Restoration recovers facial detail, hair texture, swimsuit pattern, boat surfaces and subtle tonal variations across the surrounding water, clouds and distant shoreline while maintaining the natural tonal gradation and character of the historic black-and-white photograph. The finished photograph contains no AI-generated image content.
