Mary Collinson as Maria Gellhorn and Madeleine Collinson as Frieda Gellhorn face one another beside their bed in this intimate color photograph from Twins of Evil (1971), capturing one of the film’s most visually expressive moments between the twin sisters. Dressed in matching white ruffled nightgowns and illuminated against the darker bedroom interior, the real-life identical twins are shown in a poised, emotionally charged interaction as Frieda reaches toward Maria, creating a composition that beautifully reflects both their close bond and the growing divide between their characters.

The photograph’s power lies in its balance, symmetry and emotional immediacy. Mary sits at left, turned fully toward her sister, while Madeleine stands or leans in from the right, one hand gently raised to Maria’s neck or shoulder. Their matching costumes, similar hairstyles and nearly mirrored profiles emphasize their physical resemblance, yet the pose also suggests tension and intimacy at once. The pale fabric of the bedclothes and nightgowns glows warmly under the low interior light, while the darker beams and background shadows help isolate the sisters as the clear focus of the image.

This is a particularly effective Maria and Frieda image because it does not depend on overt horror action to convey the film’s themes. Instead, it presents the twins in a quieter interior moment, allowing the relationship itself to become the subject. Their closeness beside the bed, the soft white costumes and the subdued bedroom setting all reinforce the contrast between innocence, temptation and the emotional pull that defines their story. The image therefore works not only as a scene still, but as a visual expression of the film’s central twin-sister drama.

Directed by John Hough for Hammer Film Productions, Twins of Evil stars Mary Collinson as Maria and Madeleine Collinson—billed in the film as Madelaine Collinson—as Frieda, opposite Peter Cushing as Gustav Weil and Damien Thomas as Count Karnstein. Maria is the more cautious and morally grounded sister, while Frieda becomes increasingly fascinated by the forbidden allure of Karnstein and the corrupting world surrounding his castle. That divergence ultimately draws Frieda toward vampirism and gives the film its strongest emotional conflict.

Released in 1971, Twins of Evil completed Hammer’s celebrated Karnstein Trilogy, following The Vampire Lovers and Lust for a Vampire. Like those earlier films, it draws loosely upon Sheridan Le Fanu’s vampire novella “Carmilla,” but distinguishes itself through the casting of the real-life Collinson twins and the way their natural resemblance intensifies the story’s themes of duality, innocence and corruption.

For collectors of Hammer horror photography, this image has particular appeal because it concentrates so clearly on the sisters themselves. Rather than emphasizing monsters, violence or spectacle, it preserves Mary and Madeleine Collinson in a carefully composed interior scene that foregrounds the emotional and visual identity of Maria and Frieda. The matching nightgowns, warm lighting, bed setting and close face-to-face pose make it one of the film’s especially memorable twin-centered images.

Carefully restored from historic photographic source material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the source. Restoration recovers facial detail, nightgown texture, bedding folds, warm skin tones and subtle shadow detail while maintaining the natural color balance and authentic character of the historic photograph.
