Yutte Stensgaard as Mircalla / Carmilla Karnstein emerges drenched in blood in this extraordinary color image from Hammer Film Productions’ Lust for a Vampire (1971). Seated against the dark stone surroundings with a pale cloth gathered around her, Mircalla stares outward with blood covering her face, neck and body, creating one of the film’s most visceral and unmistakably Hammer Horror images.

The photograph is associated with the film’s Karnstein resurrection ritual, in which the vampire family uses innocent blood to bring the beautiful but deadly Mircalla back from the dead. Hammer’s own synopsis specifically identifies Mircalla’s resurrection as the event that sets the story in motion before she infiltrates the nearby girls’ finishing school.

Unlike the elegant studio portraits and spectral nightgown images associated with Stensgaard’s Mircalla, this photograph presents the character at her most shocking. The saturated red blood against pale skin and fabric, combined with the severe stone setting and Stensgaard’s fixed expression, transforms the sensual Karnstein vampire into a violent supernatural presence newly returned from death.

Once resurrected, Mircalla enters the finishing school and becomes the center of a series of seductions, disappearances and deaths. Visiting author Richard LeStrange, played by Michael Johnson, becomes dangerously captivated by her, while Ralph Bates, Suzanna Leigh and Barbara Jefford figure prominently in the growing mystery surrounding the Karnsteins. Hammer officially credits Stensgaard, Bates, Leigh, Johnson and Jefford among the principal cast.

Directed by Jimmy Sangster from a screenplay by Tudor Gates, Lust for a Vampire was filmed from July 6 through August 18, 1970, with studio production at Elstree Studios and exterior filming at Hunton Park in Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire. The film received its UK release in January 1971.

The film occupies the middle position in Hammer’s Karnstein trilogy, following The Vampire Lovers (1970) and preceding Twins of Evil (1971). Drawing upon the vampire mythology established by Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, the trilogy became one of Hammer’s most distinctive early-1970s explorations of Gothic horror and vampire mythology.

This image stands apart even within that cycle. Rather than relying upon Mircalla’s glamour or romantic allure, it captures the macabre physicality of her resurrection, combining blood, Gothic ritual and Stensgaard’s striking screen presence in a photograph that immediately communicates the more graphic direction Hammer Horror was taking at the beginning of the 1970s.

Carefully restored from archival source material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped*, preserving the complete image area contained in the archival source material. Meticulous restoration recovers* natural color balance, blood-red tonal detail, facial clarity, texture and photographic integrity while retaining the authentic character of the original color image.

For collectors of Hammer Horror, vampire cinema and Yutte Stensgaard photography, this is an exceptionally powerful Mircalla image. The combination of the blood-soaked resurrection, Karnstein mythology and Stensgaard’s intense expression makes it one of the more confrontational and instantly recognizable photographs associated with Lust for a Vampire.
