YUTTE STENSGAARD is photographed in this striking color glamour publicity portrait associated with Lust for a Vampire (1971), the Hammer Film Productions feature in which she stars as Mircalla, the resurrected Carmilla Karnstein. Framed closely against a clean neutral background, Stensgaard wears a distinctive blue-and-white patterned halter dress with a high neckline and dramatic open front. Her long blonde hair falls softly across her shoulders, while vivid blue eyes and a direct, composed expression dominate the image.

With no Gothic architecture, props or supporting characters present, the photograph concentrates entirely on Stensgaard’s face, contemporary fashion and screen presence, creating a polished studio portrait deliberately different from the shadowed castles, finishing-school interiors and supernatural imagery of the finished film.

The portrait’s simplicity gives it considerable visual strength. The patterned blue fabric provides the principal color accent while the pale background isolates Stensgaard completely, allowing the hair, eyes and geometric dress design to carry the composition. This is clearly publicity glamour photography rather than a narrative scene still, presenting Hammer’s new leading vampire in a contemporary 1970s promotional style rather than as Mircalla in period costume. For collectors seeking Yutte Stensgaard Lust for a Vampire 1971 material, that distinction makes the photograph an attractive companion to character stills from the production. This example also belongs to the newly offered group of photographs now becoming available to collectors for the first time.

Directed by Jimmy Sangster from a screenplay by Tudor Gates, Lust for a Vampire places Stensgaard’s Mircalla at the center of Hammer’s continuing Karnstein story. Hammer’s own synopsis describes the Karnstein heirs using innocent blood to resurrect Mircalla in 1830 before placing her within the nearby girls’ finishing school, where her beauty conceals a lethal vampire identity. Michael Johnson plays visiting author Richard LeStrange, who becomes captivated by her, while Ralph Bates, Suzanna Leigh and Barbara Jefford feature prominently in the developing story.

The film occupies the middle position in Hammer’s Karnstein Trilogy, following The Vampire Lovers (1970) and preceding Twins of Evil (1971). The cycle draws upon characters and themes originating in Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla and became one of Hammer’s most distinctive explorations of female vampire mythology during the early 1970s. The BFI likewise places Lust for a Vampire between those two films in the Karnstein trilogy.

Production took place from 6 July through 18 August 1970 at Elstree Studios, with exterior filming for the finishing school at Hunton Park, Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire. Hammer production records also confirm Sangster as director and Stensgaard, Johnson, Bates, Leigh and Jefford among the principal cast.

For collectors, the appeal of this photograph lies in the contrast between Hammer Gothic horror and contemporary star publicity. Rather than presenting Mircalla with fangs, blood or period costume, it captures Yutte Stensgaard as the glamorous face of the production, reflecting the promotional image surrounding the actress as she took on the role most closely associated with her Hammer career.

Carefully restored from historic photographic source material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the source.
