Yutte Stensgaard as Mircalla / Carmilla Karnstein stands almost motionless amid drifting ground fog in this haunting color image from Hammer Film Productions’ Lust for a Vampire (1971). Her flowing white Empire-waist nightgown catches the light against the shadowed foliage, creating one of the film’s most atmospheric images of the resurrected Karnstein vampire.
The frontal pose, restrained expression and mist-shrouded outdoor setting give the photograph a particularly strong sense of otherworldly beauty and supernatural menace. Rather than relying on action, the image draws its power from stillness, mood and the eerie contrast between Mircalla’s luminous costume and the darkness gathering around her.
In Lust for a Vampire, the Karnstein family resurrects Mircalla, the reincarnation of Carmilla Karnstein, and place her within the world of a nearby girls’ finishing school, where seduction, secrecy and death begin to follow in her wake. Visiting author Richard LeStrange, played by Michael Johnson, becomes dangerously captivated by her, while Ralph Bates, Suzanna Leigh and Barbara Jefford figure prominently in the unfolding mystery.
Directed by Jimmy Sangster from a screenplay by Tudor Gates, the film was photographed in 1970 with studio work at Elstree and exterior filming at Hunton Park in Hertfordshire. Released in 1971, it became the middle chapter of Hammer’s celebrated Karnstein trilogy, following The Vampire Lovers (1970) and preceding Twins of Evil (1971).
Drawn from characters and themes originating in Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, Lust for a Vampire helped define Hammer’s early-1970s blend of Gothic horror, romantic obsession and vampire sensuality. Images such as this one are especially memorable because they distill Mircalla’s character into a single haunting visual presence.
Unlike the brighter studio publicity portraits associated with Stensgaard’s promotion of the film, this photograph places her fully within Hammer’s Gothic world. The fog, foliage and white nightgown make it a particularly evocative image of Mircalla as a spectral vampire figure moving through the night.
Carefully restored from archival source material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped*, preserving the complete image area contained in the archival source material. Meticulous restoration recovers* natural color balance, tonal detail, facial clarity, texture and photographic integrity while retaining the authentic character of the original color image.
For collectors of Hammer Horror, vampire cinema and Yutte Stensgaard photography, this image offers one of the most atmospheric representations of Mircalla in Lust for a Vampire. The white nightgown, drifting fog and graveyard atmosphere give it exceptional visual appeal within Hammer’s early-1970s Gothic vampire imagery.
