A magnificent wide view of Baron Frankenstein’s laboratory reveals Peter Cushing and Kiwi Kingston’s Monster surrounded by the extraordinary machinery of THE EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN.
With towering electrical apparatus, glowing equipment, stone arches and the Monster positioned at the center of the experiment, this exceptional color image preserves the scale and visual imagination of Hammer’s Frankenstein world in remarkable detail.
Unlike tighter publicity images that concentrate exclusively on Cushing or the creature, this expansive composition allows the laboratory itself to command attention. Baron Frankenstein stands beside the central apparatus while Kingston’s imposing Monster occupies the experimental table, surrounded by an intricate environment of electrical equipment, glass vessels, metal structures and heavy stone architecture. Every layer of the frame reveals another piece of the production’s elaborate Gothic machinery.
Inside Frankenstein's World
Directed by Freddie Francis, THE EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN (1964) marked Peter Cushing’s third appearance as Baron Victor Frankenstein in Hammer’s celebrated series, with Kiwi Kingston portraying the Monster and Sandor Elès appearing as Hans.
The production is especially distinctive within Hammer’s Frankenstein cycle for its visual connection to the classic Universal monster tradition. That influence extended beyond Kingston’s imposing creature design to the spectacular laboratory environment surrounding Frankenstein’s experiments.
This photograph captures that environment with unusual completeness. The viewer is not simply shown the Monster or the Baron but given a remarkably broad look across the physical space in which Frankenstein conducts his work. The towering apparatus at right, luminous equipment surrounding the table, shadowed arches and machinery extending into the foreground create extraordinary depth and make the image almost architectural in character.
The color photography adds another dimension. Cold blue electrical light punctuates the otherwise muted stone laboratory, directing the eye toward the experimental apparatus while preserving the cavernous shadows surrounding it. The result beautifully combines Hammer’s Gothic atmosphere with the technological spectacle inseparable from the Frankenstein mythology.
For the Hammer enthusiast, that breadth is precisely what distinguishes this photograph. It preserves not merely two celebrated characters, but an entire Frankenstein environment—the Baron, his Monster, the laboratory and the elaborate machinery of creation contained within one richly detailed frame. Alongside closer character and creature photographs, it provides the wider visual context that gives a serious photographic record of THE EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN considerably greater depth.
Preserved within the KissMeMonster photographic archive, this exceptional color image has been carefully restored to retain the intricate machinery, luminous blue highlights, textured stonework and deep atmospheric shadows of the original source material—revealing anew the remarkable production design and Gothic craftsmanship that surround Cushing and Kingston within Frankenstein’s laboratory.
