A mesmerizing Barbara Steele image from THE LONG HAIR OF DEATH turns the film’s defining visual motif into the photograph itself—her extraordinarily long dark hair cascading almost the entire length of the frame.
Steele’s icy backward stare emerging through the mass of flowing hair creates an unforgettable combination of beauty and menace, making this an especially striking image for collectors of Barbara Steele and Italian Gothic horror.
Photographed outdoors beside a large rock, Steele looks back over her shoulder while her dark hair completely envelops her figure. The unusual composition gives the hair an almost supernatural presence of its own, while her pale face and penetrating eyes emerge dramatically against the surrounding darkness. The effect is mysterious, elegant and quietly threatening.
The Face—and Hair—of Italian Gothic Horror
Directed by Antonio Margheriti, THE LONG HAIR OF DEATH (1964), originally released as I LUNGHI CAPELLI DELLA MORTE, stars Barbara Steele in the dual characterization associated with Helen and Mary. The film combines witchcraft, murder, plague and supernatural vengeance within the shadowy medieval world characteristic of 1960s Italian Gothic cinema.
Steele had already become one of the genre’s most distinctive screen presences, but this photograph demonstrates why her appearance was so uniquely suited to Gothic imagery. The enormous dark eyes, pale features and seemingly endless hair require virtually no scenery to create atmosphere.
For the Barbara Steele collector, this image has an additional appeal: photographic material from THE LONG HAIR OF DEATH is considerably less commonly encountered than imagery from several of her most familiar Gothic productions.
Few photographs connect Steele’s physical presence to the identity of a film this completely—the long dark hair is not merely part of the portrait; it becomes the image.
