Barbara Steele as Elisabeth Blackwood and Georges Rivière as Alan Foster share an intimate moment inside the haunted castle in this beautifully atmospheric black-and-white photograph from Castle of Blood (1964). Steele’s flowing white nightgown, long dark hair and mysterious expression contrast dramatically with Foster’s formal Victorian clothing, creating an elegant image of classic Italian Gothic horror in which romance and supernatural danger seem inseparable.

The photograph captures the deceptive intimacy that makes Castle of Blood so effective. Elisabeth sits beside Foster in the castle bedroom as he leans toward her, their physical closeness suggesting warmth and trust even as the surrounding darkness reminds the viewer that nothing within the Blackwood estate is entirely what it appears to be.

The setting adds enormously to the image’s Gothic character. Heavy patterned draperies, dark furnishings, the richly dressed bed and shadowed walls surround the couple with the visual language of a haunted nineteenth-century mansion. Against these darker textures, Steele’s pale gown becomes the brightest element in the composition, immediately drawing attention to Elisabeth Blackwood’s ghostly presence.

Originally released in Italy as Danza Macabra, Castle of Blood follows journalist Alan Foster, who accepts a wager to spend the night inside a supposedly haunted castle. What begins as an act of skepticism gradually becomes a nightmare as the mansion’s spectral inhabitants reveal themselves and repeatedly relive the violent events that caused their deaths.

Barbara Steele’s performance as Elisabeth is central to the film’s enduring reputation. Already established as one of the defining faces of European Gothic cinema, Steele brings the character an unusual combination of beauty, sadness, sensuality and supernatural mystery. Georges Rivière provides an effective counterpoint as Foster, the rational outsider whose confidence slowly collapses as the castle’s terrible reality becomes impossible to deny.

Directed primarily by Antonio Margheriti, Castle of Blood also features Margarete Robsahm, Arturo Dominici and Silvano Tranquilli. The film’s combination of haunted-house mystery, doomed romance, spectral violence and expressionistic black-and-white photography has helped make it one of the most admired examples of 1960s Italian Gothic horror.

This photograph is especially appealing because it concentrates on the relationship between Elisabeth and Foster rather than on overt horror. Their positioning, the bedroom setting and Steele’s luminous white costume create the appearance of a romantic period drama, yet the shadows surrounding them suggest the supernatural tragedy waiting beneath the surface.

Carefully restored from archival source material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the archival source. Meticulous restoration recovers tonal depth, facial clarity, fabric texture, shadow detail and photographic integrity while retaining the rich atmosphere of the original black-and-white image.

For collectors of Barbara Steele, Georges Rivière and Castle of Blood, this is an exceptionally evocative piece of Italian Gothic horror imagery—an intimate haunted-castle composition in which Elisabeth Blackwood’s flowing white gown, Alan Foster’s close presence, the shadowed bedroom and richly patterned Victorian décor transform apparent romance into supernatural unease, making it especially desirable for collectors of Barbara Steele photography, European horror cinema, haunted-house films and classic Gothic film imagery.
