A superb piece of Hammer production history brings Peter Cushing, Ingrid Pitt and Dawn Addams together at London’s Savoy Hotel as THE VAMPIRE LOVERS prepared to go before the cameras. More than a conventional cast portrait, this January 1970 press photograph preserves a fascinating moment at the beginning of one of Hammer’s defining vampire productions of the decade.
Photographed at the Savoy Hotel in London on January 13, 1970, Ingrid Pitt sits beside a smiling Peter Cushing and Dawn Addams during the press event promoting THE VAMPIRE LOVERS. Pitt would portray Mircalla/Marcilla/Carmilla Karnstein, Cushing General Spielsdorf, and Addams the mysterious Countess.
Before THE VAMPIRE LOVERS Went Before the Cameras
The Savoy event helped launch the collaboration between Hammer Film Productions and American International Pictures on THE VAMPIRE LOVERS. Filming followed shortly afterward at Associated British Productions Studios in Borehamwood, with Roy Ward Baker directing the adaptation of J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s CARMILLA.
The photograph is particularly compelling in retrospect. Pitt was about to become indelibly associated with Hammer’s Carmilla, while Cushing was already one of the studio’s defining stars. Addams completed the trio as the Countess, whose arrival at General Spielsdorf’s home sets Mircalla’s infiltration of the household in motion.
For the serious Hammer collector, that historical context is what elevates the image: three members of the cast captured together at the promotional beginning of THE VAMPIRE LOVERS, before its now-iconic Gothic imagery had even been committed to film.

The window will be 1/8″ smaller than the print dimensions.
