Christopher Lee as Count Dracula and Caroline Munro as Laura Bellows dominate this extraordinary color image from Dracula A.D. 1972, Lee’s fangs exposed as Laura’s head falls dramatically backward beneath him. The vivid blood covering Laura’s neck and chest comes from the preceding Black Mass ritual, not Dracula’s bite, creating a startling composition in which ritual horror, Munro’s vulnerable pose and Hammer Horror’s legendary vampire converge.
The photograph captures one of the most memorable sequences in the film. Laura has been drawn into Johnny Alucard’s occult ceremony at the deconsecrated St. Bartolph’s Church, where blood, ritual objects and the assembled group become part of the ceremony used to restore Dracula to life. Once the others flee, the resurrected Count turns his attention to Laura.
Caroline Munro’s physical performance gives the image much of its dramatic force. Her head is thrown sharply backward, exposing her throat, while the blood-soaked costume and loose dark hair amplify the sense of ritual violence. Christopher Lee’s Dracula, by contrast, remains controlled and predatory, his expression and exposed fangs making the threat unmistakable.
Released in 1972, Dracula A.D. 1972 brought Hammer’s celebrated Dracula cycle into contemporary London, deliberately contrasting Victorian Gothic imagery with the fashions, music and youth culture of the early 1970s. The film opens with a dramatic 1872 confrontation before shifting forward a century to Dracula’s resurrection and renewed conflict with the Van Helsing family.
Directed by Alan Gibson for Hammer Film Productions, Dracula A.D. 1972 stars Christopher Lee as Count Dracula, Peter Cushing as Professor Lorrimer Van Helsing, Stephanie Beacham as Jessica Van Helsing, Christopher Neame as Johnny Alucard and Caroline Munro as Laura Bellows.
The Black Mass sequence is central to the film’s visual identity. Candles, ritual blood, Gothic surroundings and contemporary young characters collide in a setting that deliberately bridges Hammer’s traditional vampire imagery with the modern world. This photograph captures that collision at its most intense, with Laura still marked by the ceremony as Dracula moves in upon his first victim after resurrection.
The saturated color is especially powerful. Deep crimson blood, Munro’s dark hair and Lee’s black formal clothing create a rich Hammer palette in which red becomes the dominant visual signal of danger. The tight framing eliminates almost everything except Dracula and Laura, forcing the viewer into the immediacy of the attack.
Carefully restored from archival source material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the archival source. Meticulous restoration recovers natural color balance, facial clarity, blood detail, costume texture and photographic integrity while retaining the visceral character of the original color image.
For collectors of Christopher Lee, Caroline Munro and Dracula A.D. 1972, this is an exceptionally powerful piece of Hammer Horror imagery—a vivid Black Mass aftermath in which Dracula’s exposed fangs, Laura Bellows’ blood-covered neck and chest, Munro’s dramatic backward pose and Lee’s predatory presence combine into one of the film’s most arresting vampire compositions, making it especially desirable for collectors of Hammer Films, Count Dracula, Caroline Munro photography, British Gothic horror and classic vampire cinema.
