Jenny Hanley as Sarah Framsen is captured bloodied and shaken in this striking color image from Hammer Film Productions’ Scars of Dracula (1970). Wearing a pale pink nightgown torn and marked with scratches and blood across her chest, Hanley stares tensely beyond the camera following the film’s climactic vampire-bat attack, creating one of the production’s most memorable images of Sarah in mortal danger.

The image is associated with the final confrontation at Dracula’s castle. After Sarah flees back toward the castle in search of Simon Carlson, Dracula’s bat familiar attacks her and tears away the crucifix protecting her, leaving her exposed to the Count. Simon reaches the ramparts as Dracula closes in, setting in motion the violent confrontation that ultimately leads to Dracula’s destruction.

Directed by Roy Ward Baker, Scars of Dracula stars Christopher Lee as Count Dracula, Dennis Waterman as Simon Carlson, Jenny Hanley as Sarah, Christopher Matthews as Paul Carlson, Patrick Troughton as Klove and Michael Gwynn as the priest. Hammer itself describes the film as an especially violent and blood-soaked chapter in its Dracula series, with Lee returning as the Count for the fifth time in a Hammer Dracula feature.

The story begins with Dracula himself being resurrected when a vampire bat drips fresh blood onto his remains. Paul Carlson later disappears after seeking refuge at the Count’s castle, prompting his brother Simon and Sarah to search for him. Their journey draws them directly into Dracula’s domain, where Sarah becomes increasingly vulnerable to both the Count and the supernatural creatures under his control.

Released in 1970, Scars of Dracula pushed Hammer’s established Gothic formula toward a more graphic visual style. Bat attacks, bloodshed, physical violence and the brutal treatment of Dracula’s victims give the film a noticeably harsher character than many earlier Hammer Dracula productions. Jenny Hanley’s Sarah provides the human center of the climax, with her elegant period appearance placed in increasingly violent opposition to Dracula’s supernatural world.

This photograph is especially effective because it captures the aftermath rather than the attack itself. Hanley’s curled hair and delicate pink costume retain the romantic period styling of Hammer Gothic, while the blood, scratches and distressed expression reveal the violence that has just intruded upon it. The result is a powerful combination of beauty, vulnerability and horror characteristic of Hammer’s early-1970s visual style.

Carefully restored from archival source material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the archival source material. Meticulous restoration recovers natural color balance, blood-red tonal detail, facial clarity, costume texture and photographic integrity while retaining the authentic character of the original color image.

For collectors of Hammer Horror, Christopher Lee’s Dracula films and Jenny Hanley photography, this image offers an unusually dramatic study of Sarah Framsen during the film’s climactic vampire-bat sequence. The combination of the bloodied pink nightgown, visible bat wounds and Sarah’s tense expression makes it an especially distinctive image from Scars of Dracula.
