A superb collector image bringing together two beloved figures of Hammer Horror, Peter Cushing and Veronica Carlson, with the production script literally in their hands.
Photographed together for FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED (1969), Cushing and Carlson sit side by side examining script pages in a wonderfully relaxed behind-the-scenes publicity portrait. For a serious Hammer archive, the visible script transforms this from a conventional star portrait into a fascinating record of the filmmaking process itself.
PETER CUSHING & VERONICA CARLSON - FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED (1969) Script Reading Rare Hammer Horror Photo
Cushing appears as Baron Victor Frankenstein beside Carlson as Anna Spengler, the two seated closely together while holding the script between them. Both look directly toward the camera, creating a warm and unusually informal contrast with the dark relationship between their characters in the finished film.
The script is the photograph’s defining production detail. Rather than presenting Cushing and Carlson solely in costume and character, the visible pages remind the viewer of the actors at work behind those performances and provide a tangible connection to the process of creating the film.
The portrait is beautifully economical in its composition. A simple studio background and bench eliminate unnecessary distractions, allowing Cushing, Carlson and the script to dominate the image. Carlson’s tall boots and period costume contrast effectively with Cushing’s darker waistcoat and trousers, while their relaxed expressions give the photograph a character entirely different from the Gothic menace of the finished production.
FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED is a 1969 Hammer Films production directed by Terence Fisher and starring Peter Cushing, Veronica Carlson, Freddie Jones and Simon Ward. Cushing once again portrays Baron Victor Frankenstein, while Carlson appears as Anna Spengler.
The film represented Cushing’s fifth appearance as Baron Frankenstein in Hammer’s celebrated series. Fisher’s direction continued the studio’s increasingly dark interpretation of the character, presenting Frankenstein as an obsessive and ruthless figure whose pursuit of scientific knowledge overwhelms virtually every moral boundary.
Peter Cushing’s portrayal of Baron Frankenstein became one of the defining performances of Hammer Horror, beginning with THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1957). Veronica Carlson, meanwhile, became one of the studio’s recognizable leading actresses through her appearances in DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE (1968), FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED and THE HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN (1970).
For collectors, the appeal of this photograph extends beyond having Cushing and Carlson together. The production script provides the crucial connection to Hammer filmmaking itself, preserving an image of two major Hammer performers not simply acting within Frankenstein’s world, but participating in the creative process that brought that world to the screen.
Carefully restored and professionally printed from archival source material, this museum-quality photograph is a distinctive collectible for admirers of Peter Cushing, Veronica Carlson, FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED, Terence Fisher, Hammer Films and classic British Gothic horror.
