OLINKA BEROVA is captured with a wonderfully spontaneous expression in this vivid color bathing photograph associated with Hammer Film Productions’ The Vengeance of She (1968). Immersed almost to her shoulders in luminous blue water, Berova turns suddenly toward something beyond the frame with wide eyes and parted lips, creating an immediate sense of surprise and movement. Yellow and white water lilies float around her while her elaborate blonde hairstyle remains carefully arranged above the surface.

The intense blue of the bath, warm skin tones and scattered flowers create an unusually rich color composition, while the tight square framing concentrates attention on Berova’s expression rather than the surrounding environment. Compared with more serene glamour poses created around bathing settings, this photograph has a distinctive narrative quality because her startled reaction suggests an unexpected interruption.

The color relationships are particularly effective. The saturated blue water fills most of the image, with the floating water lilies providing bright points of yellow and white across the surface. Berova’s face and shoulders emerge cleanly from this field of color, while reflected light creates subtle highlights across the water. For collectors searching for Olinka Berova The Vengeance of She 1968 photography, the combination of an expressive reaction, unusual bathing setting and unmistakable late-1960s Hammer glamour styling gives this photograph a particularly strong identity. It is also among the newly offered material now becoming available to collectors for the first time.

Directed by Cliff Owen, The Vengeance of She stars Berova—credited under her screen name Olinka Berova—as Carol, alongside John Richardson as Killikrates, Edward Judd, Colin Blakely, André Morell and Noel Willman. AFI identifies Aida Young as producer, Peter O’Donnell as screenwriter and Wolfgang Suschitzky as cinematographer. The picture was produced by Hammer and Seven Arts and released in Britain in April 1968.

The film was conceived as a loose continuation of Hammer’s successful She (1965), drawing again upon characters created by H. Rider Haggard. Carol is an apparently ordinary young woman who is mysteriously compelled toward the lost city of Kuma, where the immortal Killikrates believes she is the reincarnation of his lost Ayesha. Hammer’s production history records filming from 26 June through 8 September 1967, with work at Elstree Studios and locations in Monte Carlo and Almería, Spain.

Unlike Hammer’s best-known Dracula and Frankenstein productions, The Vengeance of She belongs more strongly to the studio’s fantasy-adventure tradition, combining supernatural mystery, exotic locations and elaborate Technicolor imagery. Hammer’s own retrospective identifies Berova as the new leading figure chosen for the sequel after Ursula Andress did not return from She, making the film Berova’s principal association with the studio.

For collectors, this photograph is appealing precisely because it favors color, expression and glamour over fantasy spectacle. Berova’s startled look transforms an otherwise elegant bathing composition into something lively and memorable, while the blue water and flowers provide a visual treatment quite unlike the desert landscapes and lost-city imagery more commonly associated with the film.

Carefully restored from historic photographic source material and professionally lab-developed, this museum-quality photograph is presented uncropped, preserving the complete image area contained in the source. Restoration recovers facial detail, blonde hair texture, natural skin tones, water reflections and individual flower detail while maintaining the natural color balance and character of the historic photograph. The finished photograph contains no AI-generated image content.
