Ingrid Pitt is captured in a wonderfully spontaneous moment between takes during the production of Hammer Films’ COUNTESS DRACULA (1971). Fully costumed as the aristocratic Countess Elisabeth Nádasdy, Pitt sits amid the film’s elaborate period surroundings laughing toward someone off camera, creating a rare contrast between the sinister Gothic character seen on screen and the actress behind the performance.

INGRID PITT - COUNTESS DRACULA (1971) Laughing Between Takes Rare Hammer Horror Behind-the-Scenes Photo

The photograph is particularly appealing because virtually everything surrounding Pitt belongs to the dark visual world of the film. She wears an elaborate period gown with an ornate bodice, flowing sleeves and a dramatic high collar, while suits of armor and heavy carved furnishings contribute to the imposing castle atmosphere behind her.

Yet Pitt’s broad smile completely changes the mood. Instead of the threatening and increasingly obsessive Countess presented in the finished film, we see the actress relaxed and apparently enjoying herself between takes. That collision between Gothic illusion and candid personality gives the photograph considerably more behind-the-scenes character than a conventional publicity portrait.

COUNTESS DRACULA is a 1971 Hammer Films production directed by Peter Sasdy and starring Ingrid Pitt as Countess Elisabeth Nádasdy. The story was inspired by legends surrounding the historical Hungarian noblewoman Elizabeth Báthory, whose notorious reputation became the basis for numerous works of horror fiction and cinema.

In the film, the aging Countess discovers that bathing in the blood of young women temporarily restores her youth, setting in motion an increasingly desperate series of murders as she attempts to preserve her rejuvenated appearance. Pitt portrays both the elderly Countess and her youthful transformation, giving her one of the defining roles of her horror career.

Directed by fellow Hungarian émigré Peter Sasdy and produced by Alexander Paal, COUNTESS DRACULA became an important entry in Hammer’s early-1970s Gothic cycle and further established Pitt as one of the studio’s most recognizable female horror stars.

For collectors, this photograph provides something especially enjoyable: Ingrid Pitt outside the performance while still completely inside the visual world of COUNTESS DRACULA. Her laughter, elaborate costume, medieval armor and richly furnished surroundings preserve a candid glimpse behind the Gothic illusion and reveal the personality behind one of Hammer Horror’s most memorable screen icons.

Carefully restored and professionally printed from archival source material, this museum-quality photograph is a distinctive collectible for admirers of Ingrid Pitt, COUNTESS DRACULA, Peter Sasdy, Hammer Films, Hammer Horror, British Gothic cinema and rare behind-the-scenes photography.
